Ah, flashbacks to all the "I think I'm just like Dexter Morgan because I'm a teensy bit socially awkward and wish I were more badass" people.

Yeah, I'm seriously tired of all the introverted asexuals posting secrets saying they're just like Sherlock.

Seriously...no.

SO MUCH AGREEMENT HERE.

I kind of think that people are delusional when they compare themselves to any very specific character, though, not just Sherlock. NO, YOU ARE NOT "JUST LIKE" HARRY POTTER/DEXTER/SPOCK/ZUKO/SPARTACUS.

I hate it when people use absolutes.

Sherlock Holmes was based on a real person. While it's highly unlikely that another person with the same skills and quirks hangs out on F!S, it's not definite that every single person who thinks this is wrong.

4/10

[personal profile] trollometer 2012-06-24 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
'I judge you' secrets are tired. You can say the same thing more without actually using the language 'I judge you' and cause so much more wank! Like, "I think you are a moron." "Get over yourself" works fine, so opening paragraph is a redundant sentiment.

You lose points for the obscuring the wank bait! You could have replacing the opening with a subtle jab at asexuals and people on the Autism spectrum. You lost major points for not insinuating that people who say they are like Holmes are trying to excuse their jerkass behavior by claiming they have Aspergers, just like him! You could have hooked the people who want to stand up for assholes who self diagnose (just in case they aren't just idiots trying to excuse their bad behavior) and the people who legitimately have an Autism spectrum diagnosis who think you were saying they are faking it.

The missed potential here is sad.

But I'm EXACTLY like Sherlock Holmes, I'M SERIOUS YOU GUYS.

Oh, people.

Those secrets always amuse me more than anything else tbh.

I can handle people relating to certain aspects of a characters personality, but when they take it too far -- like saying they're exactly like Sherlock -- then I roll my eyes.

Secrets about being totally like Holmes annoy me, but I have nothing to say against those who say they relate to Holmes. There are parts of Holmes' personality that I can relate to and parts that I can't. That's what makes a great character.

Unless you only mean people who compare themselves to Holmes and come to the conclusion that they're very much like each other. Then I laugh too, tbh. Because ... they're really probably not.

hey, i'd totally compare myself to sherlock holmes (or certainly bbc!sherlock): all the social skills, none of the brain.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel bad saying this, but a friend of mine (whom I love like a brother, but is also probably the most irritating, insensitive human being alive) just started watching Sherlock and was talking about how much he loved Sherlock because he was pretentious had no problem being rude to people and reminded him of himself and Sheldon Cooper.... OP, I kind of understand your feelings (I've never watched Sherlock and I'm not too familiar with any Sherlock Holmes canon, this is just what my friend said).

hahaha ia.

"You don't understand, I'm socially awkward and arrogant and unlikeable and mistreat my friends and I'm always right too! It was like, a revelation that really changed my life.

Also I'm asexual, just like Sherlock CANONLY is! Anyone who erases his asexual identity erases mine, too."

I can't help but laugh at people who get all super-protective of fictional characters and go, "How dare you say you're anything like [character]! You could never hope to compare to [character]'s awesomeness! They are the awesomest person ever to awesome, and you are unworthy to stand in [character]'s shadow! You are nothing like [character], EVAR!!!1!" It's kind of adorable, in a sad way.

To be fair, it's probable that at least one of the people who say this are correct that they have a great deal in common with Sherlock Holmes.

...and no, I don't think that person is me. Nor am I a "Watson" yearning for a Sherlock Holmes to codepend with.

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-06-25 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
But...I do sometimes feel similar? I mean, nowhere on his level, but part of what draws me to his character is the fact that I see some of my own traits in him. So.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, my sister once told me that BBC!Sherlock reminded her (and my mother) of me. I definitely know that I am not a genius like Sherlock Holmes, but I took it as a compliment anyway. I'd never directly compare myself to Holmes, but I'm sorry anyway, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
As a Sherlock fan (and someone who is probably asexual), those kinds of secrets give me so much second-hand embarassment.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this bothers me too. However, I do think it's fine to RELATE to Sherlock Holmes or to find qualities of him that are in yourself.

For instance, I like science, I am viewed by most as kind of eccentric, I'm a bit socially inept sometimes (although I'm almost never blatantly rude to anyone), and I have bipolar disorder where sometimes I do feel like all of the world's information is hitting me at once. I see these qualities in Sherlock Holmes, and it helps me relate to the character, both in ACD canon and in BBC Sherlock (which is my drug of choice). Sometimes I even joke with my best friend that we are Sherlock and John (she's reliable, she keeps me grounded, she's very intelligent, and she's secretly a little mad herself).

Do I think we're ACTUALLY Sherlock and John? FUCK NO.

Sherlock is arrogant and rude and completely brilliant and also has some parts of him that are pretty dark and scary. John is a complete womanizer and an adrenaline junkie and a doctor. They both deal with murders and dying all the time. We're just not them. But it's fun to empathize and pretend.

However, I will make an exception to this rule, and this is neither here or there. My ex boyfriend is TOTALLY BBC John Watson. I kind of actually look at John in a whole different light now because to get a core personality like his you have to go through some seriously really really bad shit. Poor John :(

tl;dr: It's fun to pretend, but also I believe in very rare exceptions because twenty years from now if my ex-boyfriend isn't chasing around some sort of brilliant madman I will definitely be surprised

I compare myself to Holmes as a joke. Does that makes me a terrible person?

(Besides, everybody knows that Watson (a.k.a. my sister) is the cool half of the duo.)

You're right, it's not cool to look at characters and empathize or identify with them in a non-literal fashion, not even a little bit! SHAME on people! D:
