Yeah, I'm tired of sausages too. They're nice to snack on from time to time, but the taste can get too much, you know?

What were we talking about again?

Bad example, OP. Sausages are so varied depending on culture and ingredients that a sausage fest actually sounds like a hell of a good time, even without the penis analogy.

[personal profile] trollometer 2012-06-24 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You lost your point somewhere trying to shove the phrase "sausage fest" in there (which is fairly amusing derogatory language, and a potential source of wank in itself). You may be able to draw out the "I don't ship m/m because I think females are boring! I ship [so and so] because [reasons]," crowd, but you didn't give them much to work with.

You completely missed exploring other potential sources of wank, like baiting the media experts who can rage against Hollywood for being dominated by men who don't know or like women, or the equal rights crusaders who support slash because Hollywood would never write anything but a "bromance" between two males.

You slapped us with some delicious sausage, but didn't let us take a bite!

I could never buy the "Female characters are boring" excuse because I see so many boring male characters get plenty of attention.

Quite frankly, I think the only reason that needs to be given is "Because I like it". No need to tear down the female characters.

Not to put too fine a point on it but...1. What characters are boring is pretty subjective, seeing as it's based on a person's tastes. So, what you find interesting might be something that bores someone else to tears, and vice versa.

and 2. Unless they're in your fandom and/or obviously including your fandom then...you seem to be taking that kind of personally. Chances are, they aren't even *thinking* about your fandom when they say that. I'm not saying I agree, and I find statements like that a little worrying for other reasons. However, at the end of the day reacting with 'NOT MY FANDOM' is...just taking things a bit personally.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2012-06-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, OP, I'm on your side here. I HAVE seen people make the kind of broad generalization you're talking about. Not "all the female characters in my canon are boring" or even "all the female characters in the genres I tend to like are boring" but literally "there are almost no good female characters." Not just boring -- GOOD. I have seen people basically say there are no worthwhile female character in media (well, on American TV, anyway.)

And yeah, that does make me rage, because it's not true. It's just not. They might not exist on the specific kinds of shows certain people want to watch, but they exist.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a really big reason why I'm so not into slash, apart from a few couples here and there. I cannot stand the misogyny of some fans, it's gross.

I've got a friend who keeps saying she can't ship m/m because all male characters are boring to her.

So...it swings both ways? We like what we like. We don't always express the why of it well or tactfully, but that's all it boils down to.

Who actually says that?! Like, that bluntly?? No one worth talking to, imo.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
the biggest problem with this is that a statement like that is a personal bias masquerading as an opinion!fact.

all female characters are boring =/= i find all female characters boring.

so a lesson for all: say what you mean and avoid pointless offense and argument.

Totally with you, OP. I've seen that argument a lot - that there are no female characters interesting enough to write fic about so that's why they only read about The Boys - and it pisses me off every time. Like, hot button of raginess. So much that I made this so next time I could just link to it instead of arguing. Saves time.

I have no problem with people saying they read slash because they like slash or 'cause they find it hot. I have a huge problem if they dismiss female characters as a whole instead.

i ship m/m because it's what turns me on, and people who try to rationalize it otherwise are just making excuses

that said, maybe don't blame the ppl who write slash because there are more well written male characters, but instead blame the people who aren't writing better written female characters

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Homestuck proves fans are just seriously biased for boys. Seriously, the female characters range from EQUALLY interesting to A FUCKTON MORE INTERESTING.
