That's all fair enough, but not writing her the way you want her to be written still isn't bashing or disrespectful to the character. It's just different characterisations/interpretations.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not bashing, but taking someone who's got a whole bunch of history and interesting stuff of her own going on and reducing her to cheerleader for two guys getting together is a little disrespectful to the character. In my opinion.

But in fairness that doesn't happen all that often, and even when it does, it's better than having her ignored all together or bashed, so...I'll take what I can get.

If the focus of the story is the couple then obviously the story isn't going to focus on what Natasha's doing when she's off by herself.

So, if you don't want her ignored or written out of the story with some "on a mission" excuse then what else is she going to be doing in a shipping story?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, anything? Seriously, your only two options for a character with a strong relationship with half of your couple are "yenta" and "put her on a bus?" You can't think of one single way to write her into a "shipping fic" with her own life and interests and the bond with Clint? Help me out here, I'm so baffled I can't stop using italics.

If you're writing a story centering around your date your significant other, do you focus your entire attention on your ex? If your buddy shows up in the story, I'm sure that your buddy is going to be a passing mention or hanging in the background too.

I wouldn't fault people who don't even mention her in their C/C stories.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, "hanging in the background" is not the same thing as one-dimensional cheerleader or not physically present. But more pertinently, the fic isn't about you or me, it's about Clint, and the relationship Natasha had with him in the film was a hell of a lot more complex and involved than "his ex." If you don't want to include Natasha or you can't do a good job writing her, I guess you should do whatever you need to, but don't expect me to pretend you wrote a good story about the Clint from the movie.

Did Clint show up in IM2 with Natasha? No. Did Natasha show up in Thor with Clint? No. Hypothetically, if Natasha has a role in IM3 and happens to date somebody, do you think Clint will show up? No. If they make a movie about Natasha and Winter Soldier getting romantically involved in modern time, do you think Clint will be mentioned? Probably not.

If the writer writes a story about Clint and Coulson, then the story isn't about Natasha and whatever relationship Clint has with Natasha.

We all have our own life and not getting your bff involved in everything you do is to be expected. In fact, it's preferable because otherwise, you're needling and demanding too much from your bff. If I'm dating somebody, the most I'll get my bff involved is probably a phone call saying, "Hey, I met this one guy/girl and dated him/her." I'm sure a bunch of people do the same thing.

They can still write good C/C stories with no more than one or two lines with Natasha in it.

AYRT

I actually agree with you. What I'm arguing with is the above idiotic idea that she can never have any other place in a "shipping fic" than yenta or literally physically absent.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT again and what I meant to say was that I agree with you in a lot of ways.

I agree that it's possible to write a story that ships Natasha or Clint with someone else without focusing a lot of attention on the non-shipping character. I actually disagree, though, that their not being shown together in IM2 or Thor, each films where they were minor characters performing specific duties and with no focus beyond how those roles, is the same thing as disappearing one or the other from a story that's actually about their personal lives. I also don't find it realistic to think that if Clint got involved with his immediate supervisor, who happens to also be Natasha's coworker either laterally or vertically, in the organization in which they share a lot of complicated personal history, that he and Natasha would have nothing to talk about. This story isn't about you or your bff.

Things Natasha Can Do In A Clint/Coulson Story Apart From Yenta

1) Show up to Clint's stakeouts, bring snacks, and nap in his nest as she sleeps easier with someone keeping guard.
2) Show up to Clint's stakeouts, steal his snacks, and critique his choice of nest.
3) Glare at Clint when he shows up on one of her covert missions.
4) Remind Clint to get his hair cut.
5) Apparently turn double agent, creating tension between Clint and Coulson as Clint has total faith in her and Coulson feels they have to prepare for the worst.
6) Maintain a polite distance from Coulson until Clint goes MIA and is written off as dead, at which point she kidnaps him for an unauthorised rescue mission because she figures he's the only one as invested in Clint as she is.
7) Complain bitterly about the paperwork Coulson requires, and look outraged when Clint weakly defends the need for detailed reports. Turn a pointed shoulder and bitch with Tony instead.
8) Tell Clint she doesn't have time for his romantic woes, she succumbed to poor judgement and stellar abs and slept with Steve and now he thinks they're going steady. She'll be hiding behind the printer if anyone needs her.
9) Tell Clint she washes her hands of it, she told him last year if he fucked yet another co-worker she would not help.
10) Listen sympathetically to Clint's woes, say "that's rough buddy" and then tell him about her own woes with the cute guy who works at the drycleaners.
12) Take Clint out for bubblegum flavoured vodka, and say things like "In Soviet Russia, handler seduces you." Clint isn't sure whether he should laugh or not. (Or perhaps he is.)
13) Go on a mission to outer space, send brief video messages back with kisses for Clint tagged on to the end of every report because it makes him laugh in the briefings.
14) Make Clint come to the store on Black Friday because she wants a cheap DVD player and even she needs backup.
15) Borrow Clint's books just as he's on the last chapter.
16) Go with Clint to a gunshow for soothing shop talk.
17) Plan Clint a surprise birthday party, and swap out his bullets for blanks just before so he doesn't reflexively shoot any guests. Also, it's three months before his birthday, so it's really surprising.
18) Dye her hair and leave orange handprints all over Clint's towels.
19) Hold his hand under the table during briefings about that time he was brainwashed and almost destroyed the Helicarrier.
20) Lie down on the couch with her head in his lap when she's feeling homesick for Russia.

Anon, I love you. I want to read SO MANY of these stories. Would you mind if I borrowed a detail or two in a future fic?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

late reply, but if you're still reading, help yourself!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I like all of these ideas! +1000 anon!
