Anyway, my personal favorite movie of his is his first, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, which is a straight-up post-apocalyptic fantasy. I love everything about it and could write treatises as to why. On the list as well is Laputa Castle in the Sky, which is also an adventure, and Kiki's Delivery Service, which is just delightful and beautiful. Watch all of them in the original Japanese subtitles except for Kiki, because of Phil Hartman.
I've been a Miyazaki fan since 1994 and I didn't really like Spirited Away all that much, tbh. Howl's Moving Castle was beautiful but again, a complicated movie that is more cerebral than anything else, imo. Complicated emotions, kind of boring and weird. I loved Princess Mononoke but that is also because I had a huge crush on Billy Crudup and Ashitaka.
Watch "Castle in the Sky." It strikes a good balance between his delightful feel-good stuff like Kiki and Totoro and his adventure stuff like Nausicaa and Mononoke.
