I wouldn't call 'Snusmumriken' completely straight either. (Now what's his English name? >_>)

"Snufkin". Or "Snuffkin". I think I've seen both spellings. (Not used to the English names.) Though for me, it's more obvious that Moomin has a crush on, or is somewhat in love with, him.

And then there are a bunch of characters who are just vaguely androgynous (I'm Finnish and that language doesn't have gender pronouns and it's fairly common 'round here to see someone shocked after finally discovering that, for example, the Groke or Too-ticki are female). And it's a 'verse where no one thinks anything of an elderly man habitually wearing a purple dress he inherited from his aunt.

Swedish do have gender pronouns, so I've always known the gender of the characters, but... Yeah, I know what you mean. ^^

I never paid as much attention to Moomin as I probably should have, but... Now that you mention it, I do think you're right.
