Whether you like Doyle or not doesn't bother me, just the fact that you loved Encyclopedia Brown as a kid makes me love you not matter what. It was one of my favorite series as a kid too.

Heh. Encyclopedia was just so much nicer, though. Does that make Sally John Watson? OMG. That's awesome.

Encyclopedia Brown is awesome :)

Oh, I adored those books as a kid. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
huh. i get so much pleasure out of reading the original work. but hey, you like what you like.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, whenever I see ACD I always think someone forgot the extra C in ACDC.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
And I think Australian Cattle Dog. It comes from spending my formative years at dog shows.

Hmm, I'm one of those Holmesians with a card-catalogue to cross-reference facts and I perfectly willing to admit that a lot of it falls far, far short of great writing. Mediocre at best is a fair description of some of the stories. For me it's the universe that I love.

- An unsurpassable analytical mind (that's the TRUTH, despite the obvious missed)
- A down-to-earth Good Guy (who is Not As Dim as he appears)
- Yay(!) Murder stories!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)

It's perfectly all right to prefer the version(s) you prefer. I prefer The Once and Future King over Le Morte d'Arthur, and my favorite Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the tv serial.

But, what did you start with, A Study in Scarlet? If you're still interested in giving the originals a try, try starting with one of the short stories. I recommend The Adventure of the Norwood Builder.

A Study in Scarlet with its bizarre interlude about Mormonism is really a terrible place to start the ACD canon. Seconding your rec.

Have you tried the Grenada series with Jeremy Brett, OP? Very close to the Arthur Conan Doyle stories, but the pacing is a bit better.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I read The Hound of the Baskervilles (sp?) and a Study in Scarlet and found them both very dull.

Also, Sherlock's smugness got tiring very quickly, no matter how brilliant he was. Watson was okay, though. :)

Also, like a person above me said, the whole Mormon sidetrack/subplot in Study in Scarlet was very wtf.

Like what you like, and all, but in my opinion both Ritchie!verse and Great Mouse Detective are very AU and are more tributes than recreations. BBC Sherlock is a little closer, but still doesn't really capture the feel of the stories. Have you tried watching the Granada series, with Jeremy Brett? If you really want to like the original stories, the Granada series is a very good way to get used to what Sherlock Holmes originally was.

On the other hand, if you don't really care that you don't like the books, and are perfectly happy liking what you like, good for you! Enjoy the wide spectrum of Sherlock Holmes that is popular now!

Have you tried listening to the audio book versions of the original texts? I have trouble with reading hard copies of big dense novels, but when I get the audio book version I'm a happy camper!

Raffles!

[personal profile] straydog733 2012-06-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I had a similar experience, I tried the stories out and was not really drawn in. I did, however, find something better through the experience: Raffles!

Seriously, I find Raffles and Bunny so much more interesting than Holmes and Watson. They're thieves, Bunny is fascinating in how pathetic he is, and their dynamic actively changes from story to story. Plus it was written by Doyle's brother-in-law, so that's an interesting literary back and forth.

I can see how the style of Doyles narration could be slow and offputting.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's OK not to like the Conan Doyle stories. I've read all of his Holmes stories and 'The Lost World' and really, he's not a great author. I admire him for creating a character like Holmes, but his writing does nothing for me and he's a piss-poor plotter.

I enjoy most of the Holmes' pastiches a lot better than Conan Doyle.

This is a weird advice, but try listening to the stories on audio book. It helped me get through them a lot faster, while having a lot of fun. (Most have pretty good volunteer readings available on librivox.com)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Which one did you start with? Some of the stories are, admittedly, duds, and some of the others are probably only good to people who have acquired a taste for the canon. I read "The Speckled Band" for school before I'd ever read any other canon stories and its been one of my favorites ever since, so that might be one to try. I also like "The Copper Beeches" and "The Resident Patient."

As a canon fan, let me take this opportunity to give you my permission to skip the flashbacks in A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear. No one will ever know. :P

Maybe part of the problem is things like Ritchie's Holmes have "SHIT YEAH MOTHERFUCKER BOOYAH!'d" the hell out of Holmes in the last several years. I read ACD canon back in the mid-90s before this explosion of Holmes action I've seen, and I liked it pretty well, but maybe I wouldn't now - who knows? Action is admittedly a lot of fun, whereas ACD is a lot of dialogue with some action tossed in.

Maybe just pick a different story to start with? Lots to pick from in canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Since none of the versions (but especially the Ritchie movies) you mention have much to do with the actual canon, please yourself.

Save the accusations of condescension or self-righteousness though. It comes across as WAY defensive. And you aren't a Sherlock Holmes fan. You're a media fan. Nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
I really understand you. For one, Doyle wasn't the most brilliant writer, and considering he wasn't the most brilliant writer over a hundred years ago doesn't make his writing any better, on the contrary.
The fact that, to read his stories, you have to sometimes wade through an enormous mass of imperialism-based racism, among some other problems, doesn't help. I tried really hard to enjoy them, but I didn't manage to read all of the Holmes stories. A Study in Scarlet, for example, was nice until the whole Salt-Lake-murderer-background-story exposition. Also, the fact that it's never possible to take a guess at the culprit yourself because Holmes just pulls the solutions out of his hat all the time while Watson fawns on tends to make the whole thing a bit dull.

LOL SAMESIES I've just started reading them and at first it was bit trying. However, I'm now finding myself sucked in despite the dated prose
