Raffles!

I had a similar experience, I tried the stories out and was not really drawn in. I did, however, find something better through the experience: Raffles!

Seriously, I find Raffles and Bunny so much more interesting than Holmes and Watson. They're thieves, Bunny is fascinating in how pathetic he is, and their dynamic actively changes from story to story. Plus it was written by Doyle's brother-in-law, so that's an interesting literary back and forth.
