Wasn't it gay men that started fandom being a known thing with Kirk/Spock stuff way back when?

Pretty sure it was old grannies.

I personally heard a story of a woman trucker who used to deliver K/S binders on her route to save everybody shipping costs.

/no idea if it was true but it still makes me smile to think of it.

People who are grannies now were college kids and other nerdy young women when they were writing their Kirk/Spock fic in the '70s. So yeah the same young demographic as most* of internet fandom today.

*not all of course, and there is no upper limit for enjoying fandom; there was an age breakdown in the general comments just yesterday. Some people will stay in fandom from their youth, for others it's just a phase in their lives.

No, that was women.

A large majority of slash (not gay fiction) is still written by women, but there are definitely gay men lurking and reading and writing. For one thing, the porn is usually hotter (in the good stuff) than in published gay erotica.
