This is probably why I loved Donna for offsetting that. She was a lovely foil imo. (I think I should go look for that fic you mentioned. I know nothing about YW, but DONNA semi reduxed back yespls)

YW is very good. The main characters fight against entropy (the Lone Power) through wizardry, swim with whales in oceans, meet sentient silicon computer aliens, travel to distant suns... There are human elements too, like facing cancer and dying family members. For a young adult series, I found it surprisingly deep. Or, I'm biased to its flaws ever since I first read it 10+ yrs ago and fell in love with the YW universe. ;)

I'm just looking at one of the covers of the first book. It looks so youth novelish I already know this is gonna be FUN.

I My human handler cries easily so I cannot offer an unbiased view on whether the books are tearjerkers or not.

PS: there are also three novels in the related/spinoff cat wizard series which definitely made my human handler cry
