And I am a Ten fan, but my word the wangst. There were oceans of it.

I'm also a Rose/Nine fangirl (preferably Rose/Nine/Jack if I can get it!) and I did not enjoy Ten. He was so manic and whiny and emo.

Man, you have no idea the conflict I go through watching those episodes. I like David Tennant, I (generally) like Ten but towards the end even I sometimes wanted him to STFU and die. I am too tired to speculate on or explain the reasons for my inner turmoil but I will say that the rain thing pissed me off.

And I think he's considered the "best" Doctor because he's essentially a promoted fanboy so no matter what you think of his portrayal he brought an enthusiasm to the role and fed into our childhood desires to secure our dream job. Also when he was voted that he was the most recent, and more people watch the reboot at a guess compared to the classic series. At least, more people watch it who are likely to respond to such polls. It all depends on what style of Who you like as well I suppose.

I don't really feel like commenting about Ten's angst issues right now, but damn do I want to read that fic. Care to share, OP?

Yea, I'm with most other people in that I agree sometimes his angst was incredibly tiring (especially near the end of his run, oh boy), but all in all I enjoyed ten anyway.

I dunno- I think he really did get better with Donna. Series 4 was actually bearable for several episodes, I thought.

But that screenshot, in particular, is one of the reasons I could never get into Ten (I really do blame the writing with some of his characterization). I mean, it's YES- I get that he's just lost Donna, but at the same time- I felt like I was being told "oh yes, I know you're sad about Donna, but what about Ten's utter pain?"

And don't even get me started on Series 3. People who talk like Eleven is the greatest jackass in the universe can call me back when he angsts about how the Ponds would know what to do, when he's right next to his new companion. Or if he utters "Oh, I'm gonna have to start all over," after he has to explain something his new companion. (Both of these are from the Shakespeare episode).

This is probably why I loved Donna for offsetting that. She was a lovely foil imo. (I think I should go look for that fic you mentioned. I know nothing about YW, but DONNA semi reduxed back yespls)

Yeah, I agree about whiny Ten in general, but I loved him with Donna. She made him bearable because she was the one most willing to call him on his shit.

(As a side note: am I the only one who loves Nine more but doesn't ship Nine/Rose? But in general I have trouble shipping the Doctor with any of the companions.)

I have to agree. Although there are several problems with Moffat's Who (enough for several meta posts written by others with more patience than me), I'm grateful Eleven's not as wangsty as Ten.

I love Ten, and yes he is my favourite Doctor, but I hated how whiny he was written, especially towards the end.

I was really pissed off at how his regeneration scenes went down. Half an hour of needless wangst, and then "I don't want to go". Really? I mean, really? I wanted my Doctor to go out like a hero, with awesome words (like Nine did) and we got that? My Doctor's last words will forever be "I don't want to go." Thanks a fucking lot, RTD!

It took me a long time to warm to Ten, because Eccles was the whole reason I got into Doctor Who in the first place. Eventually I liked Ten. Then ... then he started to annoy me, especially in his final episodes, all whiny and complaining about how he was going to "die" like all the previous incarnations hadn't gone through the exact same thing, and trying to be Tinkerbell Jesus and treating Martha like crap because she wasn't Super Special Snowflake ROSE ... and in that final episode I was just ready for him to be gone. I was just ready for the new incarnation and to forget all about Ten, because I was DONE with him and instead of a great sendoff, he made me angry and hateful towards a character I'd used to enjoy quite a lot.

I guess I could see how the angst could get irritating after a while, but I always felt he reacted in a pretty human manner, and they stressed that over his series. It was partly because of all the stuff with Rose (he had her accent, even!) and partly because he mostly hung around Earth, I think. When I watch his series, I don't really see the overdramatics that I hear people complaining about. I see reactions, yeah, but I don't really see the angst saturation.

For me, it wasn't even the angst as such: it was the way NOBODY BUT TEN MATTERED AT ALL.

Rose gets stuck in a different universe? OH POOR BABY DOCTOR.

Martha has the smarts to leave when she can? OH POOR BABY DOCTOR.

Donna gets her mind wiped after BEGGING HIM NOT TO DO IT? OH POOR BABY DOCTOR. EVEN THE WEATHER WILL CRY FOR HIM.

He's like the Zaphod Beeblebrox of Who, except worse, BECAUSE HE'S SERIOUS.

I liked Ten until after Journey's End, actually - though I preferred him with Donna since she wasn't afraid to tell him off if she thought he needed it. Martha was too infatuated with him sometimes when she was a regular.

Ten/Rose... I ship it, kinda, but the Nine/Rose dynamic is by far my favorite. Though I do wonder how Eleven and Rose might interact...

Hm. As someone who is still catching up and just got to the end of Ten, and I loved Ten, I guess I thought it was intentionally written that way? I mean, otherwise, how would Eleven follow up after Ten if Ten just kept being super-awesome-squee-Doctor, you know? *shrug*

I was a huge fan of Ten but by the end, I was ready for him to go. I could handle the angst until Donna left. After that, it was just too much. I think the overall writing was better under RTD (and I hate admitting to that) but I'd much rather watch Eleven than Ten.

Ten is one of those characters where I can appreciate that he's been through a lot of terrible things, I just wish he would STFU about it.

It didn't help that most of the fans I knew IRL were of the "Tennant is hot and I just want to kiss it all better" school.

I'm with you OP, and would go even further to say David Tennant gurned way too much. He was annoying. I love Nine, shame Chris Eccleston had such a difficult time and left. I think he had a lot more gravitas than DT.

I don't get the most popular thing either, but then I like some of the "classic" doctors more. I think Nine and Four would be my faves.

This really shouldn't be a secret. Most people feel like this. Even if they like him, there's definitely a feeling the love is being tested towards the end. What Rusty does is make you feel and doesn't think of the consequences of how that means about how people relate to his characters.
