I think the medpod was calibrated to men only because a) the in-canon reason of it hinting that Peter Weyland was alive and on the ship and b) the screenwriting reason of adding extra drama for Shaw to have to almost manually rip herself open. But you know, headcanon all you want, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Yeah, obviously with hindsight that's the reason, but I know when I was watching the film that I'd missed the hints that Peter was alive ("Father"? Most computers in the Alien series get parental references at some point...) and thought Vickers was going to turn out to be male or trans or something, which was why she was so skittish about having sex with Janek.

Yeah, I was watching the wrong movie for a while.

Also, Shaw ripping herself open screamed abortion politics.

The pod was calibrated for male patients because it was calibrated for her father. It provided a little bit of foreshadowing before the "revelation" that Weyland was alive and on-board.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a pretty good theory.

I think the film is in many ways open for interpretation. As a lot of it centers about what it means to be human/sentient and about creation and changing of life, the trans theme wouldn't even have been so far-fatched.

My view of Vickers was a bit different, I saw her as Weyland's illegitimate daughter, as it was on several occasions stressed that she was *Miss* Vickers - i.e. an unmarried woman, not carrying her father's name. For reasons unknown, either she or her mother ended up in Weyland's bad book and all she could do was work for his firm anonymously. He created David because he was the "son" that could no disappoint him - an heir in spirit if not in blood.

Holy shit.

You're right! I totally missed that. She should have his last name and doesn't.

Thanks for pointing that out.

OP

This theory also makes a lot of sense! I'm not sure why my brain jumped to the trans* theory immediately; it just seemed to make logical sense (plus as somebody else mentioned above, her initial reluctance to the idea of having sex with the captain also fits in with it). But yours is probably closer to the filmmakers' intent :) (Or maybe my brain was desperately trying to manufacture some actual pathos in this movie, haha.)

I like your theory, mainly because of the MALE ONLY MEDICAL POD thing because holy shit what a huge plot hole that was (why would a medical device that could not do surgeries on both males and females exist at all in the first place?)
writerserenyty: (Default)

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2012-06-30 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
It was a pretty big plothole, haha, especially since basically the one thing the medpod couldn't do was an abortion. I mean, it makes sense so we could have the scene with the self-done c-section, but it was a pretty big plothole. I get WHY it was calibrated for men (Weyland) but really, why couldn't it have been calibrated for both men and women?

I liked the movie, though.

The thought never crossed my mind because 'great big block buster summer movie' wasn't going to have a trans person in it, period. Sucks, and is rage-inducing, but there it is.

I, personally, thought she'd turn out to be an android like David, either a sort of made 'perfect daughter' who didn't know she was an android or the android replacement of a daughter who had died.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . aaaaand, headcanon accepted.

Thanks, OP!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Most likely the pod being calibrated to males only was a hint to Weyland being alive and on board. But since it was completely unnecessary considering Meredith and David's little talk on the corridor was more than enough to clue in people on that, I'd rather believe it was a hint to Vickers being a transwoman and not a mediocre and contrived plot device.

And ITA agree on the movie being overdramatic and silly.

[personal profile] bored_bitch 2012-06-29 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really think it would add anything to the movie. In fact, I think this would make it even MORE overdramatic and silly.

The pod for male bodies was for Weyland.

I think Weyland just holds his kids to ridiculously high standards and treats them like shit. If Vickers is his blood offspring, then it would make sense for David to look so similar. Robot or not, he was designed to be a son of Weyland. His similarity to Vickers would simply imply having his family's genetics (to people that don't know he's a robot, obviously).

I had the same theory while watching the movie, anon!

I know the thing was calibrated for her father.. but that still doesn't stop me from thinking that theory might very well be true.

Well, that's fantastic and I'm fully embracing your theory :D

I agree that the movie was mostly poorly written, which is a pity. At that budget, you'd think they could afford some damn re-writes.
kittybeard: (Default)

[personal profile] kittybeard 2012-06-30 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think that theory is a pretty far reach.

A trans invidual in a big summer blockbuster would be cool...but A. don't think that would have worked for the movie at all and B. ...you should probably be glad that the big summer movie starring a mtf or ftm wasn't something as shit as Prometheus X.x

Everyone who is replying to correct me on the medpod-being-for-Weyland thing: you're right, my bad, I thought of this literally a few hours after I submitted the secret because sometimes I just don't think, haha. I still think it's a ridiculous way to necessitate the "C-section", but I guess there was an explanation given.

I'm still kind of pissed there wasn't more done with the relationship between Weyland and Vickers though. I mean I guess that's a lot to ask about a movie that clearly had too much going on already, but...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
.... headcanon accepted.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly what my mom thought after seeing the movie, only that Vickers was a mtf android! She spent a good twenty minutes trying to convince me that Vickers was originally a male android.
