I can understand Tate apologists to an extent, given a narrow and specific motivation that they may or may not have, anyway... Tate was there, being mostly sympathetic for a very long time before he got revealed as the gimp. It might be a little hard to accept that development, for some people. I know that I thought from day one that the gimp was Zachary Quinto, and I was completely "WTF?" when it was revealed as Tate, of all people.

I don't get the Tate apologists. I like the character, in fact, he was my favorite in the season but in no way would I see him as poor, little puppy like some other fans do. Tate was violently disturbed. And worse still, he was self aware enough that he knew that what he was doing was wrong and still did not care. He was a villain. Yes, he occasionally did a nice thing for Violet. But that does not forgive the fact that he shot up his high school, murdered people in his own house, sodomized one person, raped another and who knows what else.

If he were real, I would be running, screaming from him because he would probably be chasing me with a hatchet wanting to hack up my body into bits.

The whole reason why he raped Vivian was because he was trying to help get that other ghost a baby.

1) People diagnosed with sociopathy still have emotions and can even form attachments to people. The only problems they run into are relating to and understanding others.

2) Tate does not meet the criteria for sociopathy. He's demonstrated on many occasions that he agonizes over disappointing and hurting certain people he cares about. The entire reason he raped Vivian was in a twisted effort to help the ghost of the original owner of the house, which wouldn't have afforded him any privileges or rewards.

It's up for interpretation whether Tate is forgivable, that depends on a person's own morals. Clinically though, you'd have hard time labeling him as sociopathic.
