Friday Fandom Reflections

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-06-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how busy the general comments thread has be lately and thought we could have a Friday discussion thread where we talk about good memories, bad memories, firsts, lasts, likes, dislikes and other personal experiences related to fandom.

Let's start at the beginning, since that's a very good place to start. What was your first fandom? How'd you find it? Wax nostalgic with us! Basically, just tell us about how you got involved in fan-ish things.

My first fandom was Gundam Wing. It introduced me to fanfiction, numbered pairings (2x5 all the way, baby!), yaoi/slash, and a whole slew of Geocities and Angelfire and Tripod fansites through the Anime Web Turnpike. Aw yiss. I actually didn't find the yaoi until later in my fandom involvement, shockingly, because the most popular fic archive at the time was a place called Aishiteru which was pretty much all het/gen.

But I didn't start writing my own fic or actively PARTICIPATING in fandom until I discovered Yu-Gi-Oh! a few years later. Now I'm all over the place. XD

Are there any other fandoms that use numbered pairings? I'm curious. I always figured Gundam Wing was the only one since all their names were numbers.

2x5 all the way! :D One of these days I shall get around to drawing the epic fanart series for them that's been lurking in the back of my mind for the past couple years.

First fandom: FullMetal Alchemist, circa 2005. I saw the anime first, fell in love, and browsed fansites to know more about it and to know more about the manga itself. One website had a "fanfiction" section, and I started reading.

After that, I started writing fanfics and drawing fanart, though very little of that went online. My online friends are few, but very dear to me.

(Hey, it looks like I'm off from work today, so I could catch the beginning of a thread!)

My memory is fuzzy on what exactly was my first fandom- some anime, either Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon or Inuyasha. I definitely remember reading weird fanfiction on geocities sites for CCS and BSSM, but I might have to vote for Inuyasha as my first fandom proper since I actually got involved in discussions over it and created fannish works.

Still, I'll always be scarred by that one epic Sailor Earth fic where Makoto screamed so hard she "punctured a lung". And then, I'm pretty sure, miscarried a baby. Oh 2003.

I think it was the original Star Wars, back in the 70's-early 80's... I fuckin' loved those movie. In fact, I still do. (-:

First proper fandom was Harry Potter, back when I was like 13-14, so around 2004, I think? Ron/Hermione was my OTP of OTPs. After that I got involved in several anime/manga fandoms, and then I rediscovered HP about a year after book 7 was released when I realized how hard I shipped Harry/Draco, and was super involved in it for a year or two.

My first fandom-by-proxy was when my sister was in the X-Files fandom and I was the only one around to squee about Mulder and Scully with.

My first solo fandom experience was with Dark Angel. I was 12 and an insane Max/Logan shipper. I don't remember anyone's name or what we talked about, except that I found the community really fun and nice. Until the show got canceled and everyone started ripping into each other like wild dogs. ("No, it's not canceled! Variety is lying! You're a lying liar who lies!" "IT IS CANCELED! FOR SOME STUPID SHITTY ASS SHOW CALLED FIREFLY WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT I HATE THEM AND YOU ALL.")

Also, years later when I heard about all the disgusting shit that happened on the DA set while filming it kind of broke the heart of the part of me that was still 12.

It was Marvel comics for me. My earliest experience with fandom-y things was watching nerds have lengthy internet arguments over silly, trivial details that most people wouldn't even notice.

Shortly afterward, I discovered manga (specifically, Fullmetal Alchemist and Cardcaptor Sakura) which lead to me discovering fanfiction. The first fanfic I ever read was a terribly written Fullmetal Alchemist incest slashfic. My initial reaction was something along the lines of "lol wtf." On the bright side, it somehow inspired me to think up tons of plots for X-Men femmeslash fics (most of which I never got around to actually writing).

Sigh. Nostalgia!

The first fandom I was really in was probably Final Fantasy VII. The first fic I read (quite accidentally) was for Visions of Escaflowne, and the first fic I wrote (which I deleted soon after, cause I realized I just wasn't all that interested in writing het fic, though Idc if other people enjoy it) was for Flames of Recca. The first fic I kept posted was for Yami no Matsuei. /thorough answer is thorough XD

Tbh, I honestly feel like my first fandom was the Lion King when I was four. I fangdiscusses lied about my favorite scenes from the movie, shipped, drew pictures of my favorite characters, and playacted characters together with friends. It's not entirely different from what I do on the internet these days!

Ghostbusters, age 10. Walked out of the theater with my first major crush on a fictional character. Fortunately, there was no Internet to post my bad self-insert fanfic to back then, but I followed the franchise in film magazines & such. (Second: The Monkees, in their late-'80s revival; I and a fellow squeeing 8th-grader traded stories when we should have been focusing on history; fortunately, the teacher was a coach and said nothing that wasn't in the textbook.)

My first fandom was Back to the Future; it consisted of me, renting the VHS over and over until the video store finally sold me one of its only two copies after a lot of begging - you couldn't buy it in stores. I found merchandise in magazines and mailed off checks Mom wrote with my cash, to buy some pencils and a DeLorean keychain (which i still have).

Later, I picked up a second fandom member when I started daring this boy who also liked it. We waited FOREVER for the sequel to get made - we got our scraps of news and photos from tabloids and magazines - and paid like $4.50 to see it in new in the theater for an evening show. In the meantime we talked often and at length about what would be in the sequel, as we had no clue except for the tabloid scraps.

First fandom, let's see... *takes out feather duster and dusts old bookshelf*

My first fandom was, surprisingly though, Doraemon. It's an anime where a robot cat lives with a boy (it makes sense in context) and it is a JUGGERNAUT in Asia, where I come from. I've been reading the manga and watched the anime on TV way before I know what fandom is (I think I started when I was 6/circa 1997/1998). When my family got the internet, I searched far and wide collecting Doraemon songs and wallpapers. Due to the internet being nothing more than a child back then, I found very little, but it was more than enough for me. :)

I drew my favourite scenes from movies and shows as a little kid. I filled up this Jurassic Park drawing pad with doodles of Lion King, Sailor Moon, other cartoons, and whatever games I really liked at the time (your zeldas, marios, metroids, manas, and also Plok. lots and lots of plok). I'd really try to draw everything exactly the way they looked in promotional art on TV or my Nintendo Powers, and I guess I have to say I picked up no actual art skills WELP. Still, I hate that this book probably ended up in a recycle bin. Either I stored it there due to dumbass logic, or my mom accidentally on purpose put it in there. Hmmmmm. I'm going with the former.

I'm not too sure when I got involved in fandomy fandom though. Like, the kind of fandom where you write letters, go online, or listen to other folk's thoughts on things. It might have been Redwall or Pokemon around '96-98. With Brian Jacques books, I thought they were brilliantly written, and I remember being super fond of Gary Chalk's chapter header art. Mossflower was the first book in the series I'd read, so I turned out to be a total Martin the Warrior fanbrat for it. There was also the part where I really, really wanted the recipes of things like candied nuts and scones because DAMN the food descriptions :L

So I went online at the library (no home internet at the time), ended up on Jacques official site, a bunch of fansites that wrote down "ABBEY STYLE" recipes, and joined a tiny mailing list where I lurked and felt validated when Martin got gushed over. Ah. My first email address where I lied about my age to get it. I love you, mailcity ♥

With Pokemon, I'd save all the gifs and official art I could find online to this shitty floppy disk. I was that kid that carried a case of floppy disks how mortifying but idgaf. And this was about the time I started mucking around with making fansites. I had one on tripod, one on geocities, another on angelfire, and one on homestead. This was about the time I thought I was totally awesome at aych tee em el and was totally "code testing" these sites to see which was better customisable for a web master such as myself.

They were all terrible and uninformative. And full of bad fanart and invented pokemons that Nintendo should totally ask me to put in their games.

I still keep one of them alive for my own personal nostalgic "this is history that must never be repeated" sessions.

Anywho, I wasn't really a shipper at the time, but I remember being an asshole to AAML fans. Oh those guys! Couldn't they see that Ash was better off with Gary alone, and that Misty was clearly more awesome with Brock? Look at these silly fans, always with the love of this boring and cliche pairing, why couldn't they see what I saw? I got into email arguments with this one girl over Pikachu being a male or female Pikachu WHICH I WON recently I guess.

And then I was also into Neopets for a couple or three years while I was still knee deep in Pokemon asshattery. I submitted fancomics of my OCs and their pets to the Neopian Times.

Pokemon also let me become a weeaboo for a long while, so this led me mostly directly into Yu-Gi-Oh, where I joined this forum after looking for actual rules for the TCG, met and befriended my first older fan (in her thirties and she was an AWESOME penpal), as well as collaborating on terrible fanfiction, uploading more terrible fanart, and this might have been my introduction to dude slash of the not smut variety (puppyshipping??? were you my first?????? rei/usagi was my first gay ship although I actually didn't know it at the time). I was friends with someone there who introduced me to j-rock, and we had a blog ring with other folk. I don't want to talk about that blog. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove it entirely from the world.

I like to think I'm mellow and less shouty by now.

Stargate SG-1. Technically it was ff.net, which I have no idea how I discovered. Actually, it probably was Gateworld, but I didn't have an account, so I went back to FF.net, and then later got an account at GW. Either way, I lurked for years before joining in, and from there, everything snowballed. I discovered shipping and photoshop and the internet and crazy fans and super nice people and everything in between.

Stargate was my first fandom, but Sanctuary introduced me to LJ and got me active outside of forums in 2009.

My first fandom was Due South - which I believe I got into after the show had ended - I had seen all the episodes and then went looking online for more info about the show and discovered fanfic... I also discovered that a lot of people didn't label their fics in that fandom, which meant I stumbled on onto a lot of explicit stuff I didn't want to read at the time. Also got called a naive idiot more than once for saying I only wanted to read gen fic... Which admittedly was probably true ... though I'm pretty sure I said it after stumbling across the explicit stuff and at that point just wanted to read something gen rather than more explicit fic.

But hay, at least I avoided the Ray wars (Both Rays are awesome in their own ways!) and at this point I'll read anything. Still skimming over the sex because it does nothing for me but if there's a plot with the sex I'll read the plot!

My first fan-ish thing was writing a terrible pen and paper self-insert Mary Sue that employed all the tropes that Mary Sue fics are infamous for. I was an angsty 10 year old and smitten with Matt (Yamato) from Digimon 01 and, thus, I commited our epic love story to the page. We didn't have Internet then, so, thankfully, I didn't have the means to post it. BUT, that doesn't mean I didn't sit my brother down and read it to him.

We got Internet while the Digimon fandom was still active and I discovered fic, especially slash fic, via fan sites. I even contributed my own awful, melodramatic slash fic to one site (the details of which you may recall if you read that "The fic you are most ashamed of" post a while back- it was the only Digimon related reply).

Then, I read Harry Potter 1-4 in 2001 and that was really my only fandom (meaning I lurked around reading fic and commenting) until 2009 or 2010 when the fandom started to die down. Even though Digimon was technically my first fandom, HP has the best fandom associated memories. The authors in the HP fandom were awesome (and probably are still awesome).

Breyer model horses. I wrote fanfic for it when I was in the 5th grade, so 1989. I was...12. :D I wrote on that story for years, drew my own fanart for it, and even managed to get it published in a fanzine when I was in high school.

Of course, I had no idea it was fanfic at the time. ^^ My first "OMG I'm writing fanfic!" experience was in 2006, for Naruto. I didn't have a plot bunny eating at me, I just wanted to see if I could do it. Heh!

I was intensely fangirly about a few things when I was a kid - I remember being so into Redwall I'd plan out AMVs for it in my head. Another one I remember is Starlight Express. And I loved my Barbies a lot and did a lot of repetitive storytelling with them.

The first fandom I read fic for was Star Wars, but only because I had two different IRL friends who wrote fic for it. My first foray into internet fandom was Final Fantasy VIII, which is where I first read porn and slash and genderswap and everything else that fandom is made of. I didn't gather the confidence to start writing until almost a year later, and the first fandoms I wrote fic for were Gundam Wing and Final Fantasy VII at about the same time.

Re: Friday Fandom Reflections

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
The first time I really became "aware" of fandom was probably when I imported the subbed version of Trigun before they ever even thought to bring it over here. I had purchased a figure of Vash because I thought he looked awesome, yet had no clue who or what he was. I have such fond memories of watching those VHS tapes curled up on a bean bag chair back home at my Dad's house. My first cosplay costume was Vash the Stampede, I won first place :)

I guess my biggest disappointment is that over the years I have found that no matter how amazing, brilliant and painstakingly close to the read deal your costume is, if you're a woman dressing as a man you will be shunned. I don't think it's intentional, at least not always, but I've noticed that bad costumes with the "correct" gender (even if they're horribly overweight) tend to get a million times more photos taken than I do, even if it's the same fandom. I've experienced heartbreak and WAY too much money spent on these things over the years, but there are good memories to weigh out the bad.

I remember when I discovered yaoi, lol, that really opened up a new world for me too. It took me a long time to participate/contribute in it, but I'd consider my first and most ultimate OTP Chris and Wesker from the Resident Evil series (though it's a given that Vash/Wolfwood was pretty prominent too).

I've made friends, lost friends, and grown up since I first started, it's interesting to try and go back and reflect on all of it.

Thanks for all your comments! When we had the age poll a couple of days ago, it was interesting to see that this comm attracts both younger and older fans. Reading about your first fandoms really solidifys, at least for me, the how our ages relate to our first fandom experiences.

Re: Friday Fandom Reflections

My first fandom was the Lord of the Rings. I got introduced to the story through the films. I then read the books and also bought every book related to the films I could, including one that gave out a list of a whole lot of great websites to go to, to meet fellow fans.

I checked them out, found my very first fansites, read my very first fanfiction, and haven't looked back since.
