This. I once had someone jump down my throat in a comment fic comm because they requested a fic for 'Peter'/'John'* with no last names or fandom and I asked for clarification on who they meant. It turns out that they were two musicians in a lesser known band.

*Not the actual names. It's been a while and I can't remember.

In a case like that, you apologize profusely... and write the smelliest piece of shit you can think of. Like, Peter mutilates John and burns his family in front of him and screams about how he never loved him and wants his death to be more painful. (unless they are into that, then you write sappy fluff).

Make sure to dedicate it to them by name.

Yeah, me too. Sure, maybe it's a clever portmanteau, but I really wish people wouldn't use it without any additional information.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
ia with this.

is it really that hard to write out the people's names? if they the portmanteau so much, can they at least include the actual names along with it? it gets confusing, especially if a ship has multiple portmanteaus.

i don't mean this to be rude, i'm genuinely curious. if you don't know which member is which, does it bother you at all? do you google to figure out which member is which, or do you just read the fic not really knowing who is who, because it's a band you like?

It sounds more like OP is saying that only labeling a fic "bandom" and tossing out a couple of first names doesn't actually tell OP what band the characters are from or who they are or whether OP will care about the fic. It's like labeling a fic "television" and listing the pairing as, "Michael/Sam." What characters am I talking about? What show? Is it something you want to read? How are you supposed to know?

That seems like a reasonable request. I've only read a few bandom fics that were genre recs and I still have no idea who is who, but I really don't think it's too much to ask that you specify what band and who is in the fic.

Yeah, I always feel bad for mods/archivers who have to figure out all the bandom pairings that people only label by first names.

Seems reasonable, especially if it's generic names. I only VERY occasionally read Jpop fanfic, but if something was tagged, say, Kanon/Saki I'd be like "which ones??" If the fandom isn't clear, it should be made clearer.

I'd assume S/mileage at that pairing xD

I've never had an issue with that with bandom. It's pretty easy to connect a name with a band. You don't come across many same names. Maybe if they leave a vague nameless summary.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Unless the name is Alex.

I have this same problem. I almost never read bandom fics because of this. If I see the pairing David/John... I just shrug and pass it by because I don't know who that is. But if I saw David/John of "Luminous Sparrow" (made-up names, of course. *L*), I might go, "Oh! Them! Doh!" and go read the fic.

csb time: for the longest time, before the avengers movie came out, i thought this girl who had been writing "tony/bruce" fic was actually writing tony stark/bruce wayne. but she really had hopped on the hulk bandwagon earlier than everyone else. true hipster.

That took me awhile to figure out too, since I'm a DC fan.

Where do you see bandom fics without the band labeled? I read most of my fic through AO3, where fandom must be labeled and LJ, where it's typically in fandom specific communities, and I know it can't be posted to The Pit. Though in a multifandom thing, it's really annoying not to see the fandom labeled, no matter what sort of source material. At least, last names should be used!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, bandom is usually a multi-purpose term that means: 1) a warning for RPF; 2) the author is involved in more than one RPF fandom an may mention other bands; and/or 3) the author doesn't make a distinction between different bands as fandoms and so all band fandoms get the same tag.

I guess, click if you're interested? It's usually pretty obvious from the names.

I thought "bandom" was vague shorthand for all the Decaydance/FBR/MCR/etc. bands that had a ton of fic coming out about them some years ago.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, but I've been in some other band fandoms where people will use that term.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always considered something bandom by using something bandombigbang called Six Degrees of Pete Wentz (or Gerard Way). There was even some kerfluffle in the bandombigbang Comm because they allowed Skippy fics (which I think is Disney RPF?) last year and then didn't allow it last year.

Yeah, I find it really bizarre when anyone uses "bandom" as a reference to anything other than Decaydance/MCR related stuff. I get that we didn't have a claim on the combination of the words BAND and FANDOM, except that we sort of did?

...Unless it's a request or something, why not just read them as if they're original fic when you don't know what band? that way you don't pass on any great fics, and you don't have to worry too much about the rest?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Did anybody else walk away from this secret wanting to read Brendon/Harry?

Sorry, should that be labeled Brendon Urie (Panic! at the Disco)/Harry Styles (One Direction)?

No?

ahUHAGH oh ym god!! i know your pain so well

I see general bandom comms like that all the time and they just, first names?? But WHICH BAND?? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY JAMESES AND JOHNS AND SEBASTIANS THERE ARE

I just.

One last thing would prob. be that... everything on AO3 that's bandom is categorized under the bandom "fandom". Where are the tags for each specific band or at least a genre?? :((
