I kinda hate how prevalent it is, and I found it a little squicky with Aang and Katara because Aang was twelve, but I also feel like I don't have much room to talk since I'm getting married to my high-school sweetheart in a month... and both his parents and his mother's parents are high school sweethearts...

I like to think Aang and Katara stayed apart for the most part until they were adults (in which case two years age difference is no big deal)... because yeah 12 and 14 = weird... but 21 and 23 = whatever. ;)

Agreed forever. It helps me reconcile with the ship a lot.

I like that a lot! Although, it wasn't the age difference that got me, just that 12 strikes me as really young to go "YUP. YOU. Everyone else pack up and go home, the Avatar has spoken!"

Now I shall imagine them going off on independent swashbuckling adventures before getting together.

Well, Tenzin is fifty, and I'm not sure about Kya and Bumi, but let's tentatively put Kya at fifty-five... that's fifteen years after ATLA, so they'd be together when Aang was twenty-seven and Katara was twenty-nine at a minimum, right?

...Yeah, actually, I can work with that idea. Sort of test the waters a bit but end up together at the end...

Try to keep in mind that Aang was 13 at the end of Avatar, and certainly not like most young teenage boys you would meet.
