Totally agree anon. I think that's what I hate the most in shows with teenage romance, including LOK and AtLA.

It's pretty damn rare for the first person you date to be your twuu lurve forever and ever.

I know those feels. Getting flamed for writing fic that isn't the canon end-couple and OMG THEIR TRUE LOVE FOREVERANEVERANEVER YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH CANON!!!!! and the characters involved aren't even teenage yet? Yeah, ten-twelve year olds often hook up and have it sunshine and butterflies and cherry blossom petals for the rest of their lives, that's definitely how it works.

i want to see more fic that takes place after the happily-ever-after. when the supposedly end-game couple realises they're incompatible, they hate eachother, and they have a messy breakup that is nothing like the ~fairytale ending~ they had in canon.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. Granted, I've never been in a relationship (nor do I have the desire to be in one either, tbqh), so the whole plot point of "teenagers in love will remain in love forever" strikes me as being silly. Just my personal POV, though I do know it's completely plausible IRL too.

Side note: that's partially why I didn't care for most of FF8's plot: even as a kid, I always thought/suspected that Squall and Rinoa (or Selphie and Irvine) would eventually break up a few years down the line, since they were still very hormonal teenagers and all that.

I don't mind young couples staying together for the rest of their lives, because I've seen that happen quite a good number of times.

And, hell, I fell in love with my husband at 14. Granted, I didn't date him until I was 20 because of bullshit going on in both of our lives, but the feelings were (unknowingly) mutual, and we've been living together for about six years.

I do agree that there aren't nearly enough conflicts in the official couples, though. People get in fights. This is just something natural and to be expected. And it's not exactly too "dark" for children to comprehend, especially in a show about people kicking each other's asses.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I use this secret to ask a question? What is an appropriate, not-annoying attitude for a teenager to have about relationships?
I'm 16, I like this guy that I've been friends with for two years, and I know very well that if we were to date, we wouldn't last 4evah, obviously. However, if I admit that yeah, I just want to date to have fun and not be too serious and boys are pretty and sometimes good company, than I get called shallow and slutty, but if I say that I want to date him because I'm in love with him and I want to be together forever, I get called unrealistic and annoying. Should teenagers just not date? I'm not trying to be obnoxious or cheeky or whatever, I'd just honestly like to know, because most people on here are older and more experienced than me and seem to have opinions on this stuff.

Generally I've always been so cynical about young relationships that I couldn't really enjoy having them when I was a younger teenager because I figured there was no point. When it comes to fiction, sometimes I can get invested as if it will last forever and sometimes I can't. Aang/Katara I couldn't buy, but when characters are a little older than that and pretty mature, and if the canon doesn't have to pair off pretty much everyone with somebody, I can get into it. I don't know yet how I feel about the Korra romance(s) cause I'm not caught up.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-07-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Is it super realistic? Probably not, and definitely not in all cases, but sometimes people want that happily ever after for their favorite characters. *shrugs* It's perfectly okay to not want it too. There probably should be more media that deals with the fact that not all young relationships last or are perfect, so I agree with you there.

[personal profile] castorochiaro 2012-07-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I'm okay with it, if I buy that the couple has good chemistry and works. Because honest to goodness, there's enough breaking up and heartbreak in real life to compensate. I turn to fiction for comfort and inspiration, so it'd kind've bum me out after a while if everything was 100% realistic and things never ended ideally, even if it's a little hokey.

look, they're not supposed to be realistic. in general it's about fantasy and wish fulfillment. real life is obviously not the same. anybody who thinks otherwise hasn't been taught BY THEIR PARENTS as they should have been. it is not the entertainment world's place to make sure children grow up to understand the world. romance is portrayed as such in books and movies because it's the ideal. ideal, as in not real but nicer to think about than the lackluster and problem filled world we live in.

ohgeez I agree with this so hard, I always feel weird about teenage romance depicted as "endgame" in fiction because I just can't buy them staying together forever... I mean, yeah, it happens sometimes, but it's too rare for it to be such a trope and remain believable.

Of course I'm also a HUGE HYPOCRITE because I have a lot of otps that are still teenagers and it totally makes me conflicted and irritated, sob

I get you there. It baffles me how many YA movies and books have teen love = true love.

It also makes me sad because sometimes I get a bit upset that books and movies 'lied' to me on finding tru luv and I have no hope because I'm over my mid 20s (I take things so literally sometimes argh)

I love reading fanfic and watching anime with older pairings as a result. It makes more sense. The world is so big, people are unlikely to marry a childhood friend - especially if they move every couple of years...

There is so much about Makorra that enrages me, but their ship being depicted as an "endgame" one is something to add to the list.
I'd never really thought about the concept of "endgame" romances. Now that I think on it, yeah, teen romances have a tendency to not last very long and yet in fiction they're all romantic and the be all and end all. In media set in our world, they fail because people graduate, go to different colleges or jobs, mature or don't mature, and drift apart. In fantasy or sci-fi settings, fans seem to assume that the shared experiences, sometimes traumatic at times, will bind the characters together forever and ever. While romances in tense situations of alien invasion/zombies/Equalist terrorism/the Hunger Games are understandable, that's not a solid foundation for a long-lasting relationship. Or even one lasting much longer than the duration of the disaster.
Say what you will about Mako and Asami, at least they went on dates and hung out together when they weren't fighting bad guys or on the lam. Presumably they talked about stuff other than sports and terrorism.

I hear you. I really love it when teenage relationships either go nowhere or are complicated without being melodramatic. Just finished watching the latest episodes of a show and I'm pleased by the diversity in how all the teenage romances ended up after a few years: some went well, some went badly, others were just flings, a few have yet to be verified. I'd have been so irked if everybody was half-married to someone else and the plot turned into a romantic soap opera, like what usually happens when teenagers are involved.

"Endgame" wank in Korra fandom is doubly annoying to me because:

1) It started practically at the first episode with people over-emoting about their "feels(*)" and how deeply crushed they are over every plot twist.

2) Even if the writers choose ultimately to develop that relationship, it doesn't make that ship's derivative fanart special. It's not an endorsement, and it doesn't elevate that vision over those of us writing cracky Amon/Mustache Man/Sato porn(**). In fact, the cracky and slashy is objectively better because they're not oh so serious about it.

(*) "Feels" reads to me like fingernails on a chalkboard with a tapioca, cotton-candy, coke, and shit chaser, and I usually don't care about slang.

(**) Personally, I ship Lin as a big old dyke between relationships, largely because I found the use of gratuitous triangles to give every major character a serious case of the not-gays to be annoying.
