In the end though I have to see the two grow up together in some way and believe it could be a healthy relationship though.

With Makorra that hasn't really happened?
(Yet).
I roll my eyes at people who call Mako abusive (I mean, please the guy is just a poorly developed jerk who was in the middle of a love triangle which sucked ass). But honestly if someone is not truthful in their previous relationship it DOES make it less likely they will be this time around. They got issues, and I'm kind of hoping if anyone gives a tweaked version of the "If you ever hurt her" speech it will be Asami HERSELF. More or less warning Mako not to mess things up this time around and be honest with Korra, not leading her on if his feelings change.
Also unfortunately Korra, while a much more compelling character never really grew either in any significant way let alone growing with the help of Makorra's existence. Mako is not a believable rock for Korra like Katara was for Aang. Kataang felt important too and affected Aang's major decisions but it didn't take over everything.
So unfortunately Makorra is a less believable/more frustrating relationship. Things like the announcer in episode 5 saying Mako liked Korra that way as if it was obvious also didn't help. It didn't grow organically and I have trouble believing Mako as an actual -friend- to Korra let alone a love interest. Canon ships I feel at least in fiction should have compelling reasons to begin- there has to be chemistry. And through either initally being friends or enemies who eventually understand something important within each other depending on what they're going for.
Makorra was unfortunately all over the place. With Kataang you can really believe that Aang and Katara care for each other, and even if no romantic entanglements had followed you can believe their friendship and the fact they care for each other. So it all depends- even for those who hate Kataang and their younger age, somehow those two remaining together forever seems more probable than Makorra lasting/being happy right? Because well, Katara's and Aang's relationship was also a friendship. And friendships can often be seen to last 'more than one lifetime' even if it's between kids especially considering what they went through.
(Personally though I'm a kataang shipper but I... actually have in my head canon the idea the two broke it off for a year or two while teenagers- like because of the strain of certain things like airbending revival and what not and other peoples expectations regarding it as well as sometimes wondering if the war affected their feelings. I just have this image of a stressed out Aang and Katara yelling at someone over some stupid comment regarding that from an Earth Kingdom noble or something, almost causing an international incident in the process.
It wasn't bitter towards -eachother- or anything and they even dated other people outside the gaang, and got back together later when they knew for sure that what they had was real and worth it and screw other peoples expectations. Because in my eyes Katara and Aang would always be friends whether they would break up or not.)
