But it didn't tank. What's ticking me off is seeing is a bunch of (male) critics ragging on the story because it's not what they're used to, but I figure they don't get that lots of mother-daughter relationships really are like that.

That, that exactly. I always looks for critical reviews on movies I like, because a lot of them have good points. For Brave? Not so much.

Also, I'm both annoyed at and accepting of the fact that the movies doing better than Brave in the box office are of the "brainless comedy starring horrible male characters" variety. Summer blockbusters always disappoint me this way. :/

If it helps, the guy friends I know who have seen it didn't dislike it because it was out-of-the-norm; they disliked it because they thought the story was weak and dull, as did I and several other female friends of mine.

It wasn't because it was mother-daughter; I adore Finding Nemo and that was father-son. Gender doesn't matter when the story is out-right dull.

the story is out-right dull.
OOOOOOOpinion. Internal conflict is just as interesting as external to some of us.

Yes, it's opinion. But it is the opinion of myself and the majority of my friends that the movie was dull. According to nearly everyone I've talked to, the movie failed.

And it didn't fail because the conflict was internal; it failed because this internal conflict was really really dull. I like internal conflict but the conflict given in this film was too dull.
