...well Toy Story 3 made $41 million Friday and $37 million Saturday and an estimated $31M Sunday on it's opening weekend, but that had an established following of nostalgic young adults...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Internet activism is easy. Real life involvement, even going to a stupid movie, is harrrd. Same goes for for all other SJ causes. It's easier to push a button and go to bed then get your ass out there in the sunlight, rain and snow and be involved.

Honestly the general consensus was that it was good, just not Pixar-Excellent. Still a good movie none-the-less.

(i'd actually love it if she was.) it just kind of made me rage a bit that defying traditional gender roles/no romance storyline = AUTOMATIC LESBIAN. because NO STRAIGHT/BI GIRLS EVER don't fit the typical roles or have low interest in romance.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)#2 It wasn't that great of a movie so don't feel bad about missing out on it. I could have waited a week or two and been fine. I wish I had now but my friends were dying to see it opening weekend.
#3 I am so confused as to why people are crowing about Disney films with female leads always getting hitched at the end. Mulan, though implied to have a love interest at the end, was not driven by romance through her story but by family and honor. Alice didn't get a love interest and neither did Lilo. Even films that feature male leads don't always have a love interest (Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Hunchback to name a few). Yes, princess films typically get princes but it's not set in stone that is MUST happen.
Seriously, I never understood the uproar over Disney films and love interests. (For the record, I am a female who grew up completely in love with Disney films as a child.)

I personally loved the movie, and can't see it tanking; it's gotten pretty good reviews, and is already expected to surpass Tangled at the box office. I think it will do pretty well once it gets released on DVD/Blu-Ray, because animation lovers love owning a copy (including yours truly).
You gotta remember, this is an animated movie (doesn't appeal to everyone by default), and it doesn't have prominent US celebrities attached to it. I'm surprised it's doing as well as it is, especially when it's going against movies like Prometheus, Magic Mike and Ted.

I don't feel a work of fiction should be allowed to boast that it "breaks gender norms" and "empowers women" unless it does so in a way that is GENUINELY new and rare and defines the character as an individual by doing more than just "I may have tits, but by god I'm going to defy the Law of Vagina and shoot that gun, swing that sword, shoe that horse, ride any man I like, cuss like a sailor, and to hell with having babies or getting married SO THERE." That's done. We get it. The TV shows commercials encouraging women to join the army and the Episcopal church ordains them whether they're married lesbians or ex-hookers or deep-sea divers and they dominate many fields of science and art and WE GET IT, YOU DON'T NEED A PENIS TO MAKE FART JOKES AND USE A HAMMER.
So what makes this different? What makes this special? If it's not doing all that well, maybe that's because the answer is simply "not enough."
Example. You know what I think is a great empowering movie for women, especially children and young girls? The Secret of NIMH. Why? Imagine Mrs. Brisby wasn't a cartoon mouse. The movie is about a woman raising four children as a single mother who challenges obstacles she is told by everyone are insurmountable because she must save her son. She faces different kinds of predators -- some that would do her harm or kill her just because that's how the world is (imagine that instead of an owl and a cat and a tractor, these were just the kinds of bad people who are in the world -- an imposing authority figure, a criminal, a landlord), and some who would use her as a political tool and do harm to her and her children in order to further their own interests. There are a few who would protect her, but some of them are lost, and all of the real challenges she faces, she must ultimately face and overcome alone.
This movie is empowering because it's not about a woman who is strong because she can beat the boys at their own game. It's empowering because it's about a woman who is strong. A woman with no special gifts or talents -- she can't even read more than a few words. A woman who is not physically strong or unusually fast or dexterous. She is just a woman, and her only weapon is her determination.
That is one HELL of an empowering movie because it's about a woman who makes a choice and sees it through. In the every-day lives of most women, that's all there's REALLY CONSISTENTLY going to be. Life gives you an obstacle. You make your choices, and you fight for them, and if the first thing you try doesn't work, you try something else, and something else, you try the back door, you try the pulley and the lever, you persevere. Even though you are afraid. Even though you are alone. Even though you have to decide to leave your children in the care of a neurotic bird. You make yourself PRESENT, you make your voice heard, and you bleed, and you burn, and then you bind your wounds when the battle is over and you go on living.
And that, you see, is a message of empowerment.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)Children are still the primary audience for animated movies and probably always will be. They are the ones who beg their parents to take them to see it, which is why complete crap like the Madagascar movies make so much bank. While adult animation fans are there, it's pretty ridiculous to assume that the reason it didn't make as money as it could have lies with them.
And it far from tanked.

Listen, in all seriousness, activism and entertainment are two different things. Thins in that area tend to be more complicated than that. I can imagine someone saying, "I'm going to go watch that indie movie written and directed by a woman to support it." But a Disney Pixar film? I don't think so. Besides, how are we supposed to know if this movie has a true feminist message? Just because the protagonist is female and fights with weapons doesn't mean it supports women rights since you can make the same case for Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. I am the sort that stays away from spoilers so I have no idea. I also only ever watch movies for entertainment and no matter how positive a movie's message is, if it's not entertaining I won't buy a ticket for it unless it's indie/small studio that really needs my support(not saying Brave isn't entertaining, but maybe it wasn't for people who didn't buy the tickets.)
