Because, as usual, it's a bunch of self-serving lip service versus actual belief.

Internet activism is easy. Real life involvement, even going to a stupid movie, is harrrd. Same goes for for all other SJ causes. It's easier to push a button and go to bed then get your ass out there in the sunlight, rain and snow and be involved.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, except a lot of "SJ" people aren't even trying to be activists, they're just talking about their lives. You never just went online and vented? Heck, that's what half of the people I know from school who I follow on tumblr do with their blogs: rant about their lives.

Also, I really hate this idea that words and the internet don't matter and are somehow not "real". There's nothing wrong with education via the internet and there's nothing wrong with using the internet to talk about politics instead of looking at funny pictures of cats.

No, but if you talk alot about politics and then don't go vote for the candidate you were pushing everybody to go vote for... you didn't do very much now, did you?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

That's a really good metaphor. I'll steal that next time I'm having this argument.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I'm too young to vote and politics and sociology are just fun discussion topics for me, anyway. Some of my friends like science, but they're not building nuclear reactors in their garages, they're just reading about it online and talking about it. I have friends on the debate team, are they wasting their time cause they're not chaining themselves to shit? I just find discussion really interesting and fun, and I often learn something. When I do get opportunities to make a real difference; voting with my wallet like this secret mentions, or real voting when I get old enough, I take them.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh this. This is why I can't take internet SJW seriously when activism takes much more involvement than ranting about some random user on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
+1 Yup.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That assumes that everyone has the money/time/transportation necessary to go see a movie. Not everyone has that free afternoon or evening, or that extra $10-20 (plus any babysitting costs, for people with small children) for "going to a stupid movie." That doesn't mean that when they talk about the importance of supporting films with strong female characters, that they're engaging in "self-serving lip service" instead of "actual belief."

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly perfectly this. I watch movies on television. Apparently that means I don't DESERVE female protagonists that aren't weighed to the ground with sexist bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
What does rme mean?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that makes sense! Thanks!

I was staring at it for like three minutes trying to figure out if it was a tragically mistyped "mte". I need to keep up with this internet lingo...

urban dictionary is wonderful if you don't know the meaning of an acronym :)

Thank you! I was wondering too.

Activism is going to see a big-budget movie now? Oy vey.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's not activism, but it is important. One of the easiest arguments for creators/studios to make when asked why they don't have more female protagonists in their films/shows/books/video games is that female protagonists don't sell. So if Pixar makes a movie about a girl and it does worst than their other movies, it's just that much harder to get another movie like it made.

Okay, I get that rationale though I laugh at the wording of the anon I'm replying to (going out into the rain to see entertainment is just SO HARD YOU GUYS), but why is the opening weekend so important, and now ohnoitstoolate? Hasn't it just come out?

Because Hollywood sets great - disproportionate - store by the takings from opening weekends and that influences subsequent decisions about whether to invest in similar productions. There are movies that didn't open particularly well in the US but did well in overseas markets - yet they're regarded as box office failures. And you know how many random factors can influence an opening weekend. For instance, I'd imagine that films that opened last weekend must have struggled due to the severe weather in many places. Or, try opening your new film at the same time as a big sporting event...

Absurd and frustrating, but true... and yeah, I'm digging up examples because I hate being all anecdata and generalising. I was reading about this just recently and there were some examples that surprised me because I thought of them as having been popular, successful films...

Just going to point out not everyone is able to go see movies on opening weekend (which is kinda beside the point you're trying to make, I know; and I honestly do agree with your main point). It's easier for me now in the area I live in currently, but when I was living back east... we went to see Transformers opening night and just stepping into the theatre, there was such a cloud of perfume and cologne that I thought I was going to have to go to the ER for the massive migraine I got (as it was I had to take double my usual dose of migraine medication I'm prescribed). (I am SO FUCKING GLAD for living in a yuppie crunchy granola area because it means if people are wearing perfume, it's natural stuff like BPAL, which doesn't set off my migraines.)

That's on top of the anxiety of being in a large crowd, which I often don't want to deal with. I'll wait a few days and see it mid-week when there are less people.

That being said, I'm not really convinced that seeing a movie opening weekend is totally activism ;)
