Activism is going to see a big-budget movie now? Oy vey.

It's not activism, but it is important. One of the easiest arguments for creators/studios to make when asked why they don't have more female protagonists in their films/shows/books/video games is that female protagonists don't sell. So if Pixar makes a movie about a girl and it does worst than their other movies, it's just that much harder to get another movie like it made.

Okay, I get that rationale though I laugh at the wording of the anon I'm replying to (going out into the rain to see entertainment is just SO HARD YOU GUYS), but why is the opening weekend so important, and now ohnoitstoolate? Hasn't it just come out?

Because Hollywood sets great - disproportionate - store by the takings from opening weekends and that influences subsequent decisions about whether to invest in similar productions. There are movies that didn't open particularly well in the US but did well in overseas markets - yet they're regarded as box office failures. And you know how many random factors can influence an opening weekend. For instance, I'd imagine that films that opened last weekend must have struggled due to the severe weather in many places. Or, try opening your new film at the same time as a big sporting event...

Absurd and frustrating, but true... and yeah, I'm digging up examples because I hate being all anecdata and generalising. I was reading about this just recently and there were some examples that surprised me because I thought of them as having been popular, successful films...
