I get that ymmv, but I really enjoyed Brave

I loved the mother-daughter relationship (my own daughter is rapidly approaching the age where I will become the uncoolest, stupidest person to ever live and she'll be making her mind up about really important things that she has to decide for herself independently of me and the potential for conflict there is huge; when I hit that stage, I didn't really find a way to be friendly with my mother again for decades; hopefully I will handle the whole "you aren't going to become a carbon copy of me OMG WHAT YOU ARE NOTHING TO ME" a little better than my mom did, but one of my worries is the possible deterioration of my relationship with my daughter). I love that both the mom and the daughter have to change. I love the moments of humor, and I love the most powerful characters in the movie are women. The witch is arguably the most powerful character in the whole film, and the Queen is clearly the brains and the authority behind the throne.

I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I went into it expecting to be very disappointed after reading everybody on the internet go "meh" and ended up really enjoying it.

My theory is that people who went in with 'high' expectations were disappointed (like me who was expecting an exciting and more epic movie than the princess plot they gave us) and those with 'low' expectations really enjoyed it.

*nods nods*

That makes perfect sense.

I think most people just expected something different. I was one of those people, and then I realized that a mother-daughter bonding story was just as important and interesting as a generic fantasy adventure.

I also really liked it because a lot of the time, the mother is dead in the fairy tale adaptation. You don't get a lot of mother-daughter bonding stuff in the children's movie arena.
