Re: Help me FFS; I need anime recs

Awwwww :)

I was going to recommend Baccano but then I got to the part about it being for a nine year old child and...er...

Fruits Basket is a lot of fun! I can't remember how mature it was though...

There are also some fairly kid friendly anime on Crunchyroll (free and legit), but they're subbed for the most part and I don't know how much patience a child has for subtitles :(

(if your kid would stand for subtitles, Chi's Sweet Home and Natsume Yuujinchou are adorable and fantastic)

I'm pretty sure the Natsume Yuujinchou manga has been licensed in America, so she could give that a shot too! It's quite good

Oh! And Card Captor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew might interest her (the dubbed anime of both shows are of...dubious quality. So I would go for the manga)

And if she liked Inuyasha, then you might try Ranma 1/2 (it's made by the same person)

sa again

Ohhh, wait I thought of some more

I think Ouran Host Club might be okay, and the D N Angel manga/anime might also be of interest!

Maaaaybe, Full Metal Alchemist but it does get kind of violent/disturbing (well, I watched it when I was 12. But I also watched Oz when I was that age so...yeah, idk)

I loved Tenchi Muyo when I was younger too

FMA gets to all sort of creepy creepiness. It's awesome, but I wouldn't recommend it for an 8 year old.

lol yeah, for some reason I got confused by the ages for a split second in that post and thought I was talking about a 12 year old instead of a 9 year old. Try FMA in a few years, OP! It's pretty good!

Re: Help me FFS; I need anime recs

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
And Baccano a few more years down the line XD

haha, definitely. I will praise that show with my dying breath but damn does it ever get violent. So good though.

And after all the physical violence and mild mindfuck, you get to the REAL mindfuck that is Mononoke (I freaking love that series). And throw in some Paprika to the mix.

Why you so disturbing, anime? I had to judge my anime collection pretty long and hard and be like "hmm would this psychologically scar a nine year old?" before I could think some ones that would be okay (and I still accidentally recommended FMA for a nine year old, oops!)

Speaking of which, I just thought of another one! I really liked Earthian back in the day, OP. Plus, it's like beginner's shounen-ai (except for that part where they actually have sex but I think it was fade to black/implied)

Oh, are we going the shounen-ai/slashable route?

Yami no Matsuei! It has cute boys AND supernatural elements!

(Most likely not appropriate for a 9-yr-old though. *sigh*)

Ohh, I love that one! I'm so excited that the manga is being picked up again. But yeah, I'd give it a few years

Hahahaha ikr
I actually had this conversation with a friend. She wanted to introduce her 6 year old niece to Studio Ghibli... and decided on Spirited Away. When she told me that, I had my most WTF WOMAN WHY'D YOU CHOOSE THAT face. You could've gone with Kiki! Ponyo perhaps! Even Howl would've been a bit too much for a 6 year old, with the creepy punishment for the Witch of the Waste and the creepier final half, and you chose the "My parents are pigs and I must slave away to an evil witch while this ominous guy's eating everybody and chasing after me"?! She was all "I know, I know!! I didn't think of it like that" The kid got quite scared, the poor thing :(

Mononoke is mindfuckery? I thought it was normal D:

What are your thoughts on Paranoia Agent and Ergo Proxy, Anon?

Re: Help me FFS; I need anime recs

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched Paranoia Agent. There was such a hype around Ergo Proxy (people on forums worshipping the anime) that when I watched it I was kind of underwhelmed, so I don't think I'm the best judge for that.

Mononoke (not Princess Mononoke) gets better and better every time I watch it. It's such a finely crafted series; I notice new details in every rewatch. And my sister and I have picked our brains apart about the whole Kusuriuri/Other Self issue, especially in the Ochou arc. The visuals are so refreshing, everything related to the traditional Japanese theatre is just beautiful, and the way the colours' intensity and dullness were handled in the Nue arc... every part of the anime adds immensely to the plot. I've never become so involved in hunting tiny little details in my media before and it's never happened again, so I cherish that anime a lot. To me, all this adds to the mindfuckery rate XD

Ah, okay.

Finely crafted and pretty, yes, but I never thought it was exceptional. Time to grab a few friends and have a rewatch party. \o/

I love Tenchi so hard, so that's a definite at some point. I think we'll have to buy it though which is fine.

Josh and I have been talking about a re-watch of FMA which I barely remember except for "Brother!" LOL so maybe we'll watch and see if it's okay for her.

Thanks again!

I'd say no for FMA. First watched it when I was 14 and the Nina episodes (Shou Tucker? Alchemy exam? Nina and her doggy friend Alexander?) disturbed the hell outta me. YMMV though.

I think waiting is probably a good idea. My husband and I were going to watch it anyway by ourselves, and I'll get a better feel for it, but I'm thinking not yet for her. :)

We're actually watching Inuyasha subtitled so that's no problem for her. :) She is excited by the Japanese words she picks up here and there.

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. :)

That's awesome! I'm pretty sure I hated reading subtitles at that age, so good on her! So in that case, I also recommend Polar Bear Cafe (it's weird, but I like it). Sakamichi No Apollon is also pretty good, but I might have found it kind of boring at that age. You never know though!

You're welcome for the recs! I hope your daughter might enjoy some of them

Seconding Fruits Basket. I don't think there are any problems for a child - well, some cursing if you watch the sub, but the dub is also really good and would probably be easier for your daughter anyway, so I'd go for that.
