Help me FFS; I need anime recs

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-07-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I need something that is available on Netflix or Hulu, please. :)

As a family, we have been watching anime with my 9.5 year old daughter. We finished Dragonball Z, which she loved, and we're down to the last 2 episodes of Inuyasha (links to bb!girl fanart upon request LOL), and have Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple lined up next.

What would y'all recommend for next viewing. I thought Inuyasha was too scary for her initially, but she handled that fine, maybe because most of the violence is against demons and not actual people? IDK? I'd prefer nothing with too much overt sexual content or really graphic violence. Sell me on something awesome, y'all. :)

If you also have any manga recs for her, that would be appreciated. When I took her to Barnes and Nobles and she saw that Inuyasha CAME IN FREAKING BOOK FORM, she nearly had a fainting spell of glee. :)

Hahaha a kid flipping out at the sight of manga, that's so damn cute.
In the akuma/oni/yokai/folk creatures vein, I'd go for Natsume Yuujincho (Natsume's book of friends, or something like that). It's not action-packed, but it's a nice series. The titular character can see spirits and demons and inherited the "Book of friends" from her grandma who shared that gift. She had the names of a bunch of creatures written down to manipulate them, so he goes around giving the spirits their names back and avoiding the ones that want to steal the book from him.
If you're looking something more shonen-ish, Nurarihyon no Mago is also good, though I dropped the manga a few months ago. I don't know how the anime's like, but the first part of the manga was really entertaining. The main character's a quarter yokai but tries reeealy hard to be extra nice and not evil at all. His grandpa is the leader of an important... let's say yokai gang, and totally expects him to inherit the position. As far as I got, the series is about him trying to embrace his badassitude for the greater good of protecting both yokai and humans. And he can, indeed, be quite badass.
Hope it helps you! I'm also totally not obsessed with yokai (nope, not me .__. ), but I wouldn't mind some recs ;)

OMG, thank you so much! I really appreciate the recs. :)

I have to admit I don't know what a lot of the terminology means; I've never actually read any manga myself although I've watched a fair amount of anime.

What does yokai mean? :)

Japanese spirits' world is one big ball of wtfuckery and strange hierarchies and subdivisions that get eerily specific as you delve deeper (umbrella spirits, anyone? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasa-obake). The term yokai, as far as I've seen, is usually translated as demon, but so are the terms oni, akuma, and so on. Sometimes I've seen it alternated with "monster" as a translation in fansubs/scanlations, but then what word would they use for mononoke (and don't get me started on this one)? And the evil connotation depends on whether the author wants to play it up or write it off as a mischievous nature. Ultimately they're forces of nature, and as such they can fuck you up, or not. Sort of. You can expect anything in between curiosity and downright resentment, but you basically don't want to get on their bad side.
Anyway, I recommended these series because of Inuyasha (him being half-yokai).
These are their wikipedia articles, btw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natsume_Yuujinchou
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurarihyon_no_Mago
And the definition for yokai: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yokai

... I... I wrote a wall of text. I promised myself I wouldn't. Sory m(_ _)m

I like Chi's Sweet Home, and Azumanga Daioh, but they might be a little "older" then your daughter? AzuDai isn't scary or anything, but it's about high school girls, and some of the stuff they talk about might go over her head? Yotsuba&! is by the same author and not about older girls, so you might like it too.

(AzuDai isn't sexual, so you know, but the girls do talk.)

Princess Tutu? It sounds cheesy, but I adore it. (Only, skip the manga, the manga sucks so bad.)

Also, I like Slayers, but it's an acquired taste, so YMMV.

As for manga, AzuDai, and Yotsuba&! have pretty good manga. And Chi's Sweet Home.

I also like A Bride's Tale, but that might be a little too "adult", or just not interesting to her.

Yes I am this starved of understanding when it comes to my love for this mangaka. Nobody I know gets why I'd enjoy a story set 2 centuries ago in the middle of nowhere with characters that aren't "burdened with glorious purpose" and just want to live their normal lives.
Inhumanly high fangirl squeal at f!s? I regret nothing.

Awwwww :)

I was going to recommend Baccano but then I got to the part about it being for a nine year old child and...er...

Fruits Basket is a lot of fun! I can't remember how mature it was though...

There are also some fairly kid friendly anime on Crunchyroll (free and legit), but they're subbed for the most part and I don't know how much patience a child has for subtitles :(

(if your kid would stand for subtitles, Chi's Sweet Home and Natsume Yuujinchou are adorable and fantastic)

I'm pretty sure the Natsume Yuujinchou manga has been licensed in America, so she could give that a shot too! It's quite good

sa

Oh! And Card Captor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew might interest her (the dubbed anime of both shows are of...dubious quality. So I would go for the manga)

And if she liked Inuyasha, then you might try Ranma 1/2 (it's made by the same person)

sa again

Ohhh, wait I thought of some more

I think Ouran Host Club might be okay, and the D N Angel manga/anime might also be of interest!

Maaaaybe, Full Metal Alchemist but it does get kind of violent/disturbing (well, I watched it when I was 12. But I also watched Oz when I was that age so...yeah, idk)

I loved Tenchi Muyo when I was younger too

FMA gets to all sort of creepy creepiness. It's awesome, but I wouldn't recommend it for an 8 year old.

I love Tenchi so hard, so that's a definite at some point. I think we'll have to buy it though which is fine.

Josh and I have been talking about a re-watch of FMA which I barely remember except for "Brother!" LOL so maybe we'll watch and see if it's okay for her.

Thanks again!

We're actually watching Inuyasha subtitled so that's no problem for her. :) She is excited by the Japanese words she picks up here and there.

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. :)

That's awesome! I'm pretty sure I hated reading subtitles at that age, so good on her! So in that case, I also recommend Polar Bear Cafe (it's weird, but I like it). Sakamichi No Apollon is also pretty good, but I might have found it kind of boring at that age. You never know though!

You're welcome for the recs! I hope your daughter might enjoy some of them

Seconding Fruits Basket. I don't think there are any problems for a child - well, some cursing if you watch the sub, but the dub is also really good and would probably be easier for your daughter anyway, so I'd go for that.

It's really late here, but I'm pretty sure I'm not seeing Sailor Moon on the lists? Would that be up your daughter's alley? (Not 100% where that's avail now a days, but it's got to be up somewhere.)

Also, please tell me Rurouni Kenshin when she's older, since she apparently likes some action in her anime ala Inuyasha? ;)

Seriously, Inuyasha was a such a 'gateway' anime for me when I was younger lol.

How could I forget Sailor Moon? I loved Sailor Moon. Thanks for reminding me.

I love Rurouni Kenshin. That will definitely be on the list for later. And MUUUUUUUUUUUUCH later Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex.

-Doraemon
-Ikkyuu-san
-Astro Boy
-Kimba the White Lion/Jungle Taitei

-Shaman King
-Medabots
-Monster Rancher

You're welcome! The older anime have very different art styles and animation methods so they may not be to your tastes, but I hope there are shows in the list you find enjoyable :3

I can vouch for Shaman King. I have to warn you; it's a show that deal with death, ghosts, spirits and sometimes gets surprisingly serious, but I don't think it's anything that would traumatize an eight year old. For the most part is your typical action/comedy show.

The only thing that I can think of that could creep a child out is a character that pops up later on occasion that is a young girl/woman who locks herself up in an iron maiden for religious reasons. It's not very graphic, but I remember being weirded out by that and I was about 14 when I watched it.

Digimon is like a slightly more serious/dramatic version of Pokémon, but it's nice. I don't think there's anything that could traumatize a child in the first two versions (Maybe the villains? They scared me, but in a good way). The third one (Digimon Tamers) got kind of scary and disturbing later on although without breaking ratings or anything, and I didn't watch any of the following ones, so I don't know about those.

Pokemon is perfect for children, but it's very episodic and can get repetitive the more episodes you watch.

I also liked Medabots. It's about children entering in competitive robot battles, but it's very light-hearted.

Not an anime, but looks and and even plays like one: Oban Star Racers. I found it a little boring, but it was children-appropriate, and it didn't talk down to the audience.
