Went to check the latest new fic in my fandom and lo, there was an omega-verse story right there at the top. You guys, I am so sad. I thought my fandom would be free of that. I was naive, for no fandom is safe from omega fic. It is a sad day for me.

The problem with Omega!verse is that it tends to take over. It's like termites or ants, if you see one keep an eye out because there will most likely be more on the way.

There's kinky Suzaku/Lelouch enslavement stuff, but no omegaverse as far as I know. I think it's because the fandom is super small, and the kink meme is only kept active by a few people.

No Omegaverse in my fandom, either. :D
This is likely because all of our writers are very classy, and any smut that pops up is only really smut in the loosest sense of the term, more character study through physical intimacy. That and the fact that there are currently under 500 fics in our FF.net archive.

The thing about such a small fandom is that we're rather self-policing in terms of quality. Not that anyone points out the crappy fics, but that they get so little recognition that whoever wrote them eventually realizes that everyone else is getting reviews and they must be doing something wrong here.

The really great thing is that these authors often come back with different, much better, material. It's easier not to get discouraged when no one actively says you suck, so the realization is mostly in the back of your own mind...and so our little handful of Mary-Sue OCs get buried in the back of the archive under a pile of icy silence.

Your fandom sounds great! I love when I've found a small or beginning fandom that's full to brimming with creativity and support.

However...the whole "classy people don't write smut" part of your comment kind of bugs me. Your fandom and be classy and small and full of awesome developed creative superduper fic and still contain smut. Smut is not some big evil thing only dirty girls read. Just sayin'.

Omega!verse kind of skeeves me out, TBH. It strikes me as a bit anti-feminist for reasons I won't bore you with. Every time I see one of these stories, I go all sad face for a moment.

...This is kind of long, a bit, but hopefully I have articulated this logically.

Okay, so Omega!verse is basically a fusion of a lot of different things. Dog penises/knotting, D/s, rape or at least dub-con, and pregnancy fetishes usually. Possibly with a little slavery mixed in, depending on the author. Only omegas can become pregnant in this verse, making them, in effect, the stand-in for women as a group (since IRL, you're not going to be getting pregnant if you aren't biologically female). And this is the case even when you see women alphas and omegas, because the female alphas have been assigned the Omega!verse's version of male privilege. In fact, the whole alpha group, male or female, is basically male privilege turned up to eleven. Any omega in heat absolutely will want to have sex with them, because being fertile makes a person a sex maniac, in this verse.

And that segues right into the next problem, pregnancy fetishizing. I have no issue with people viewing pregnant people as sexy. The problem comes in when pregnancy is viewed as strange, as the Omega!verse treats it. Because being pregnant? It's not strange. It's not only not-strange, it's so normal as to be unremarkable. It's literally as normal as breathing. In fact, it's when someone can't become pregnant that there starts to be health concerns. It's healthy, it's normal, it's ordinary, it's not weird. And since the ability to become conceive, biologically, is what defines female from male, treating pregnancy as some kind of bizarre act of domination implies that female people are inherently meant to be dominated.

I realize that the Omega!verse is not simply fictional, but fantastic. However, that kind makes these problems slightly worse. After all, women are normal and so is pregnancy, as I pointed out earlier. Pregnancy is already treated as bizarre and Othered in the real world, which is bad enough. But with this context of pregnancy being viewed so weirdly IRL (which makes pregnancy fetishizing skeeve me out badly enough when it's just by itself), Omega!verse turns that up to eleven, too, by making the ability to be pregnant the hinge that the entire fantasy turns on! Omegas aren't attractive to alphas because they are interesting people, they're attractive because they're fertile. A relationship might grow between an alpha and omega, and might be a perfectly healthy one, but that's not why people read Omega!verse fic. They read it to see someone, a woman stand-in, subjugated by her own biology. Because female biology is, apparently, inherently subjugating. :(

So...yeah, that's my thoughts. Male privilege times a million, female subjugation out the wazoo, and female biology both defining women and making them weak. And all rolled into one neat package that fandom has, bizarrely, branded as sexy. I'm not going to go running around kink memes trying to stop people reading/writing this stuff, but it definitely makes me blink.

Most people I know who like omegeverse (it's not my kink, but I've seen people talk about it quite a lot) are aware of the issues within it (the inherent dub con nature of it, for instance). They like it because it's, you know, kinky. Like how people who have a non-con kink are aware that it's heinous irl and not something to be sexualized when it happens to an actual person.

I actually wouldn't mind the basics of omega verse if it weren't for the weird sexist shit. I think it has potentially really interesting dynamics and ideas, but all the fic I've ever seen are just full of weird sexism and stereotypes.
