Theoretically I work in a non-urgent contact centre. We take calls from members of public to report non-urgent property crime, take general enquiries from the public, switch bitches, Crime Stoppers, and reports from officers.

In actuality we take calls from idiots at all hours of the day and night who are drunk, wasted, angry and looking for someone to abuse, or just too silly to dial emergency when it's an actual emergency, and we're not allowed to hang up on them or tell them to get stuffed, because it could be an emergency. Oh and calls from officers. I quite like that part, haha.

I'm not fond of my job but it pays an awful lot and I'm paying off student debts with it.

If you'd like to know more, PM me :)

Would do, but I lack an account.

When I get one set up I'll drop you a pm.

Oh man, you sound like you'd have some great stories for [livejournal.com profile] customerssuck.

What do the officers call about, out of curiosity? And what is a switch bitch?

"Switch bitch" is someone who answers switchboard calls - people ringing into a main office number to get redirected out to individuals or separate departments.

Officers call to create, update or finalise reports which are the more serious type (like assaults, frauds, that sort of thing) and things not handled in our centre. Also to fix up mistakes and just generally get things done. It's interesting. And also they know what to expect from us and we know what to expect from them.

just too silly to dial emergency when it's an actual emergency

Who does that? I don't even know the non-emergency number for my city's police department, but I could probably dial emergency by touch alone.

Unfortunately lots of people. They have our number saved into their phones, but can't remember to dial 000 for emergency. Or they dial 911 instead... too much tv watching...

Hi there, I work in something similar. It's a contact centre for non emergencies for everything. Plumbing, dental, vets, security. Anything nonurgent. I have strict info to get off people. And man, do they like to argue over it.

And holy fuck the dumb people. I get people ringing up to be silly going "what is this, what are we calling, why do you want my name and number" and yes, people ringing up with something that's clearly an emergency and WONT PHONE THE EMERGENCY NUMBER.

Just, DUDE.

Then awful sad times with kids that don't understand the questions. Or angry people who won't listen to me - I'm trying to get details and they go "I'm at the horse bar, YOU KNOW THE ONE. Why do you need my number, YOU KNOW IT"

NO, NO I DON'T. That's why I am arguing with you over getting these details while XY has apparently been bitten by a snake.
GIVE ME DETAILS

Exactly! The number of times we start off a conversation by saying, "Ma'am, I need your full name, as it appears on your driver's license. Yes, with your middle name. Is that a nickname? No, I need your FULL name. Yes. Your full name. Okay, what's your last name. How do you spell that. Yes, I'm aware of how XYZ is normally spelt, I'm asking how YOU spell it. Is that the same name that's on your driver's license? Okay, what's the name that's on your driver's license. Is that the full version of the name? Ma'am, I need your FULL NAME AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE."

*headdesk to infinity*
