I'm not much into crossovers (I count daemon fic as a crossover) but a praying mantis daemon is such an awesome idea that I hope someone writes it now.

It's not a fic, but I saw someone who was role playing with a praying mantis daemon. I thought it was unique.

I've noticed the same. I'm writing an Avengers daemon AU, and I spent a long time trying to choose daemons that both made sense and weren't run of the mill. So much time, in fact, that I've completely lost the plot. :)

(I mention this, because it may be why you only see the normal daemons. For a lot of people, extensive world building kills the fic urge.)

I agree and disagree. I *adore* coming up with elaborate daemon headcanons (I actually decided once that Adelle DeWhitt from Dollhouse ought to be an Emerald Tree Boa, of all crazy coincidences), but I don't think dogs are necessarily uncreative, if you do your research and select your breed carefully. Some people just strike me as canine.

What really bugs me are the legions of tigers/panthers/eagles/black mambas, the ultra badass apex predators all over the place, when the original books are pretty clear that really incredible people often have daemons that don't fit that ~OH SO DANGEROUS~ mold. That's more in RP when there's a daemon AU meme or something, but it happens in fic too.

I adore Sherlock daemon fic! I think I have read all of those examples. I do think John suits a canid daemon myself. Something about the combined sociality and prey drive that they posess totally suits him.

I do think that people could be more creative with the daemon species though, but I think that birds and mammals do suit most characters better than any other group. It might be something about the body language that birds and mammals have that I think leads to a better visual image.

I hope people instead of using a generic popular species could look into closely related lesser-known species. Instead of using a raven, for example, have a look at all the members of the corvidae family and maybe you'll find something better suited. There are some amazing lesser-known species out there.

To anyone who doesn't mind WIPs, I can suggest blind-author's Republic of Haven. Sherlock and John are not particularly unusual like the OP wants, but the explaination behind forms is perfect, and the background characters can have some interesting daemons.

The author also uses latin names with correct italicisation and capitals, which is just about the most awesome thing ever.

isn't it canon for HDM that all military personnel have dogs, though? i don't disagree with your overall point but there are some trends like that, as i remember

My problem with this is that the books didn't show people with out there daemons too often. Lyra's parents' daemons were pretty darn unique and they were a golden monkey and a snow leopard, so the average person isn't going to be something out of the ordinary. Dogs and birds are common, with the first being common for servants and especially loyal people and the second being the ONLY type of daemon for a witch; insects and reptiles are introspective, clever, or untrustworthy. Fantasy creatures (I may be misremembering) are signs of mental instability.

I've seen plenty of more out there animals, but John Watson, imho, would have a canine daemon based on his personality. I wouldn't call it a sign of lack of originality to have a boring daemon: I'd say it was being true to the books.

I vote this thread becomes a rec thread for daemon!AU fics.

My biggest problem with daemon!AU fics are that none of them are ever set in Lyra's world, the world where you could, you know, actually see people's daemons.

I want a proper HDM crossover, dangit (and I've been working on a few, myself).

Also, it bothers me that people always pick random-ass out there names for character's daemons.

But then there's the opposite of this and the people who complain when you give a character an unusual daemon. I got a number of complaints when I wrote John's daemon as a binturong.

I read an excellent Iron Man fic where Tony's daemon was a beautifully described flying snake.

Probably because a lot of people have arachnid/snake/insect fears or phobias, and to most people, a praying mantis is not *cuddly*. (And where would we be if Our Hero/ine couldn't cuddle with said daemon when they're blue?)

I'd actually be pretty damn nervous about hurting a butterfly or mantis daemon - they're fragile!

I saw someone somewhere in a crossover with a Humming Bird daemon.


Personally I think it would be cool if the animal itself often reflected the environment too. i.e equilavent niches. So a rabbit in one place would be a meercat somewhere else and a different type of rabbit somewhere else and a bandicoot somewhere else etc etc


I noticed the only domestic-animal daemons to show up are cats and dogs, perhaps a fancy horse. Because obviously a cow or pig or goat isn't majestic enough
