Well, I like to think of spiders as eight legged helpful web-spinning usually venomous... cats, so maybe not that much like cats after all. I can't say this for all spiders, though, but jumping spiders are definitely curious little buggers. Stand close enough to them or dangle a finger about one, and it'll probably start staring and working out a way to jump on you because hello what is this strange big blobby thing that has suddenly entered its world???

Spiders really can't tell or identify humans- we're way too big for them! Like some kind of odd moving mountain. It's the same in the sense that we simply wouldn't be able to take in the size of a huge hill at one go and only see a bit at once; spiders are the same with regards to people. At most, they only see a bit of you and depending on their nature, might either be scared and ball up then run away when they think you're not looking, be scared and just run away or be curious and hop over and investigate (Jumping spiders. Always. I have yet to find an un-curious one, photographing them is a problem when they keep trying to jump on the camera).

Also, a spider really won't bite unless it feels actively threatened. Venom is important to them and they wouldn't want to waste it! Also, 'big huge blobs' really don't register as food. If you can see a spider, that's a good thing! Chances are it doesn't really want to have anything to do with you, so just scoop it up into a cup and let it out. Most spiders are pretty neutral / friendly towards people, and they also eat bugs, so they're good little critters in my books.

I must have annoyed the crap out of a spider then once... I was bitten 7+ times in my sleep up one arm starting from my hand to my shoulder... I was very lucky it wasn't anything serious.

Honestly, most spider bites aren't serious! But if it was in your sleep then... chances are you might have been squashing one a bit. They really only bite when feeling threatened and cornered or when hunting for food, other than that spiders would normally prefer to run. Even the most aggressive spiders only are so when they feel as if they're threatened- it's the same with many other animals, they'll usually try other things (like being all !! aaa and head-bonking you, in the case of bees) before resorting to biting to get away. That's why I'd say if you can see a spider, it's probably no harm to you- it's when you can't or don't notice one and inadvertently threaten it that there could be a problem.

Oh I have no doubt that it was threatened by me... I just wish it had decided that preserving it's venom was more important than biting me -.-
