Not witty just curious.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-17 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else have foods that they never think they like until they eat them... every time? Because I always say I'm not a big fan of almond chocolate cheesecake but whenever I cave and make it I'm always the one sneaking off to the fridge to grope pieces with my mouth. And grapes. Whenever I see them in the store I just think ehhh, but if I buy them I end up eating most of them in one sitting and saying to myself that I have to buy grapes everyday. And then never do.

I pretty much just like all the foods. So, um, no? LOL

But I do like bizarre food combinations like cheddar cheese dipped in soy sauce (actually Dale's is better, but I think that's a Southern US thing so you might not have seen; think thicker soy sauce).

I used to be like that when I was younger. Usually involving things that had odd textures that I would think were going to be gross in my mouth - but the taste ended up being better than I thought it would be.

These days I'm more likely to try something at least once before passing it up.

I'm incredibly, incredibly picky. If I don't like something the first time I won't eat it again. But sometimes I can't believe I like it 'till I'm eating it. For me, it's chocolate anything, from cake to candy. Hear me out; I hate chocolate. It's never appealed to me, at all. I say I hate it, and even when I do eat it, I never eat much, but somehow I always find myself eating a candy bar or picking up something chocolate-covered and thinking "what am I doing? I'm not supposed to like this!"

Which is sorta like what you're talking about? LOL

Yeah I kind of worded it badly. I meant food you know you've liked in the past but whenever you think of eating it you just say "meh, not a big fan." but once it's in your mouth "OMG this is awesome why do I not eat this everyday?" and then the cycle repeats itself.

I'm in the same boat with you as chocolate. I say I only like dark chocolate in small portions but once I start eating it I can't stop. WTH?

Damn you all.

Instead of popcorn I shall have a fudgesicle for dessert. BRB.

Edit:
Not a fan of sweets but goshdarnit fudgesicles taste good.

Oh "Not a fan of sweets" is the biggest lie I tell myself. Sure if it comes down to it I like spicy/savory but I have never turned down a pudding.

I'm like this with hummus. I think it's because I don't like the smell, but then if I start eating it, I don't want to stop.

I've only ever eaten homemade hummus and I make widly varying flavors from chipotle to peanut butter so I'm a little unsure what smell you mean. Is there a smell the store bought kind have or are you talking about smelling the tahini in plain hummus?

Re: Not witty just curious.

[personal profile] becka 2012-07-18 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's a much bigger problem with the store-bought kind because it's stored cold, but there's like, a smell that tahini has when it's cold (I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS A THING OTHER PEOPLE NOTICE AND I CANNOT REALLY DESCRIBE IT) so when one of my office mates gets their hummus out of the fridge for a snack, it is just… no. But hummus (or plain tahini) that is not served chilled… smells different. IDK I AM PROBABLY NUTS.

Thanks for explaining. I have no idea if you are nuts but I doubt it.

Thank you for mentioning peanut butter hummus! I had no idea that was a thing, but it looks like a great idea.

IDK if it is a thing either I just make it for my mom. She eats it on toasted pita bread or even in a wrap. Sometimes I use peanut butter to replace tahini if I'm out.

We make our hummus without tahini and I am super curious now...how much pb do you put in your version? Do you have a recipe that you are willing to share?

I am gluten free and hummus is a staple of my new diet. Would love to try this.

TIA

I rarely use recipes as I prefer to just wing it in the kitchen but when I do use a recipe and sub pb for tahini I've never made adjustments to the measurements. Though the peanut butter I buy/make is not very sweet so if yours is I would maybe keep an eye on that and compensate with a spice or something?

Are you still adding garlic and cumin? We wing it too so perhaps I'll just start with the basic stuff and go from there. Thanks for the info. Time to play Kitchen Lab with my kids, lol

Depending on what I'm making but I usually do. So far my favorite peanut butter hummus was paired with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. My mom prefers turmeric and paprika as well in her "plain" hummus and I've never had a problem with the peanut butter overwhelming the dish. Plain peanut butter hummus is also a nice delivery system for hemp seed.

Don't you have to keep hummus cold to keep it from going bad? Or do you mean just that when it's time to serve it, it's meant to be room temperature?

Re: Not witty just curious.

[personal profile] becka 2012-07-18 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I just mean serving it at room temperature! You definitely want to refrigerate it before/between servings.
