f!s How did you choose your username

[identity profile] sandor051.livejournal.com 2012-07-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's something I've always been terrible at.

(look at my name, look at it!)

and having lost the old e-mail account I used to register this, and wanting to get a proper dreamweaver account I've got the option to start fresh.

Like a dumbass. LOL

When I got my first AOL account in the nineties, I was just going to be lunabee (which was my nickname for my cat) and added a random number when the name was already taken. I stuck with that handle for everything when I got into fandom. If I had it to do all over, I would have chosen a different name.

I'm horrible at it too. all of my fandom ones were the type I've seen people complain about the most - "fanof[tvshowname]", "fanof[charactername]", etc. Current fannish account is still pretty ridiculous. I'm totally uncreative when it comes to making up screen names.

I chose my username because my IRL friends sometimes called me sandwich back in high school.

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-07-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Mine is ancient; 13 year-old me picked it out because my favorite character, Sam Carter from Stargate, was at the time, a Major, and I also liked to ship things. And I thought I was so witty, calling myself majorshipper. And it's stuck, despite the fact that I've never really loved it.

I'm about to move usernames though, on LJ, since I kinda hate this one. My new one is lyrics from my favorite song, You Shook Me All Night Long, so hopefully I'll feel better about it. I might move it over here, someday.

'rubber' because of my favourite album and 'tea' because I... like tea. I'm as original as a hipster with a moustache :(

I just thought the two words sounded good together.

[personal profile] inkdust 2012-07-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I tend to put more thought into these things than is strictly necessary.

I searched for something to represent who I am and ideas I like that 1. didn't have numbers or underscores, because I ALWAYS get tired of those and 2. used words that visually fit well together for comprehension.

ink, because I write and because I like the word both orally and written
dust, because it can signify old manuscripts but also being made from dust (Biblical reference in spite of being a non-Biblical person) and thus simple, earthly, temporary

Yeah...verging on obsessive thought.

I grabbed the name of a videogame character I liked, found that it was taken when I tried to register an email with it, so I added a bunch of random letters and used that everywhere.

[personal profile] silverau 2012-07-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I came up with this when I was thirteen and eager to use my newfound knowledge of the periodic table of elements that I gained from middle school science class. Because Pokemon Gold and Silver were my favorite Pokemon games. Plus "Au" is the first two letters of my real name.

I only use this handle when my main handle, She Who Loves Pineapples (or shewholovespineapple) is too long for the site.

I'm so bad at it. This is my second username (that doesn't contain numbers, or that was just my name) in eight or so years. And I'll be sticking to this one for a while, I think. It just popped into my head - my name is Helen, I get Hel as a nickname... and I liked the small pun.

Now people think I'm a Hiddlestan haha, so I might change it.

Made this one up about a year ago.I'm studying biotechnology, and I was working cleaning in a biochemistry laboratory and I always liked the biohazard stickers (I would take them home a lot just because I could), so I decided to name myself after them. Also, I am a lady, hence the 'girl' bit.

All my screennames on the Internet are MST3k related. I try to make it something a little obscure, so you'd have to know more than just Manos (no Torgo), Space Mutiny (no Big McLargehuge) or some of the more popular riffs. It's the Internet version of wearing an obscure pop culture t-shirt just to see if someone will get it. So, yeah. Dumb, I know.

Mine is kind of self-explanatory. I remember my first username was something like insomniascribe because I thought I was sooo deep. Then I turned twelve.
intrigueing: (Default)

Re: f!s How did you choose your username

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-07-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I came up with it because it was one of the first things that popped into my head — Data always said "intriguing" on Star Trek and so I just made that my name on a whim and didn't realize it was misspelled until a while later. I didn't really bother to make a new account with a better (or at least correctly-spelled) name because I meant for this account to just be a place to stash bits of my writing, because I was too paranoid about my family snooping to save documents on my computer. But then the name and account got familiar with people when I used the account to discuss things on my friends' journal posts and I was kinda stuck with it.

Basically, after reading Perdido Street Station and the Golden Compass, I played around with the whole steampunk convention of coming up with different names for existing phenomena (i.e. anbaric current instead of electricity), and I thought mechanosapience would be an amusing alternate term for artificial intelligence.
catystorm: (Default)

Re: f!s How did you choose your username

[personal profile] catystorm 2012-07-18 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
When my parents first unleashed me upon AOHell back in the day I was given the strict instructions to never, ever give out my real name online. So I came up with a pseud that was a first name/last name that wasn't anything close to my own. (Catherine/Catalina Storm)

Of course, being twelve, I decided to be a special snowflake and spell "Catie" as "Caty". Except everyone mispronounced it as a "catty" and I got irked so I changed that. However I made my LJ, along with my aol e-mail account, "catystorm" because of it. And the username just kind of stuck.

In conclusion, I was twelve. And I've used this name for 11 years.

Re: f!s How did you choose your username

[personal profile] thene 2012-07-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
When I first got an AOL account when I was 15, I'd just been reading a book of myths and when I found my first idea for a name was taken, I tried putting in 'athenemiranda'. As six-syllable usernames are cumbersome, the friends I made generally called me 'Thene' and these days I sign up to everything as 'Thene' if I can (I'm athenemiranda on LJ, but Thene became free recently; I figure LJ is too dead for it to be worth switching).

My real first name is kinda twee, so when I was at college an IRL friend who I talked to on LJ a lot took to calling me 'Thene' IRL and these days most of my IRL friends do it.
