International/Non-American music recs?

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2012-07-19 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey guys!

So some might know that I love Japanese pop music. I'm also familiar with a lot of Korean music. However, I'd like to expand my horizons on this. Recs?

I like pop music, but I have extremely open tastes, so I'd just like to hear what F!S likes and maybe go from there. :)

Listen to Deep Forest! They remix music from many parts of the world and it sounds cool.

I liked Alizée's first album (Gourmandises( too. (French pop singer.)

Françoise Hardy has nice songs too, but it's kind of old music.

I can't recommend Cusco enough. They're a German band that has been active since... the seventies? I think. Anyway, they're electronic/new age, but their songs are great. They have dozens of albums, but I recommend checking out Cool Island, Tales From a Distant Land, and Planet Voyage mostly.

Enigma? Awesome songs, too. (Be careful if you search for their videos... some of them tend to be a liiittle on the NSFW side.)

If you like electronic music, check out Ladytron!

Also, listen someday to Nana Mouskouri. Very prolific singer. Beautiful voice. Sang in a lot of languages.

Lots of great stuff, thank you so much! I'll definitely give these a shot. I've actually wanted to listen to more French pop, so I'll absolutely give Alizée a try!

i'd like to second Françoise Hardy and Ladytron -- a very excellent friend with very excellent taste had me listen to both recently, and they are very different but very fantastic!

I especially like Étonnez-moi, Benoît" off of "Comment Te Dire Adieu?" and "J'ai Jete Mon Coeur" off of "The Yeh-Yeh Girl from Paris!", both by Françoise Hardy. Her songs are just so much fun! even when they're probably a little melancholy, i can't tell, because i don't speak French. =]

Aw, a bit more:

Epic music: ERA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQAY_za79BM

Funny/parodic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqWGbMUsLug (it parodies the usual rap music clips with scantily-clad women, when it actually is the same kind of music but the singer is actively chatting up burly men)

Zouk (music from the French Caribbean islands): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyc3Tjxr4X0
I love this one because one host of the César (French Academy Awards) made her entrance like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NwNCwnR57I

My favorite singer is Laura Pausini. She's Italian and has songs in Italian, English, and Spanish.

Ooh, thank you! Italian artists are definitely something I'd like to learn more about, as I was slightly disappointed to hear a lot of American music when I was there back in 2006; I wanted to hear more Italian music than I did!

I really like Alejandro Sanz

Corazon Partio from the album Mas

And for something completely different than breathy Spanish pop, I also really Die Antwoord. Most of their videos and songs are NSFW.

Evil Boy and I Fink U Freeky.

I have some recs from Sweden:
Salem al Fakir does some very cute pop - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1vDHgNf7CuE

Zeigeist have disbanded but they are still wonderful electronica/synth pop - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bKHXMYz_5Lc

Kent is one of the greats over here ( Swedish lyrics, though) - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fWxUr_vDwwE

If you like rock, I'd recommend The Hives - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1M02bAWDFkI

Fever Ray! Only one album out so far, but it is ay-mazing and got many "album of the year" when it came out. Pop, but sort of hypnotic/emotional/strange. Very Scandinavian, if you like that sort of thing.

North African/Mid-East
Azam Ali: Iranian-American vocalist, composer, and hammer-dulcimer player. Also a vocalist for Vas, Niyaz, and The Dune Soundtrack
Khaled: Rai (Algerian)
Toufic Farroukh: Lebanese jazz composer.

Americas
Bebo and Chucho Valdez: Cuban Jazz Pianists. A beautiful reunion performance.
Astor Piazzola: Influential Argentine composer who bridged classical, jazz and tango music. (This video is Yo-Yo Ma with some members of Piazzola's band.)
Gotan Project: French-Argentine collaboration.
Rodrigo y Gabriela: Mexico: You know that trick of really good acoustic guitarists who can make one guitar sound like two or more? Now put them in a duet.

Europe
Gypsy Kings: Spanish Romani
Giorgio Conte: Italian Singer-Songwriter

Of course, European rock/pop groups are too numerous to name. High on my playlists right now are Jam & Spoon, Giorgio Moroder (big early influence on electronica and dance music), Wolfsheim, Beborn Beton, (synthpop) Lacuna Coil (Goth/Metal), Within Temptation (Symphonic Metal, with one of the sexiest bassists in music), and of course The Pet Shop Boys and rediscovering Yazoo.

Unfortunately I discovered The Jade's brilliant cover of "It's a Sin" just as they broke up. The Pogues defined Celtic Punk for a while.

And then there's Van Canto. Spine tingling a cappella chops on heavy metal and a wonderful sense of fun.

Oh I forgot trip-hop master Wax Tailor (frequently featuring the etherial Charlotte Savary) and the more energetic turntable masters Birdy Nam Nam (also this trippy video.)
