Honestly, while I was really confused starting it off (the first mission bit took me forever on initial gameplay) I think it does get better. There is a map; usually it is the 'm' key on your keyboard, but I can't remember the exact controls for ME right now. However, if you press the escape button, a lot of info will pop up.

I think a lot of current games assume you play games, so it might be a bit tricky, and I know there was one part in the first mission where I basically ran around for 20 minutes not sure where I was supposed to go. But it gets better, I think, and the story and the game are so much fun that it's definitely worth it to keep playing.

Thanks, it really makes me feel better about it to know that I'm not the only one who floundered around on the first mission. Maybe I'll give it another go tomorrow!
