Mass Effect

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-07-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So, guys, I started Mass Effect in earnest today. (Bought it on the Steam sale.)

I've never played a game like this and...well, it's weird. I'm having a hard time getting used to the controls and orienting myself on the field. My teammates disappear on me and I have no idea where to go for the first mission (Is there a map? Is that what that circular thing in the corner is supposed to be? Why am I hemmed in then?).

I kind of want to wait until I'm with someone who's played it before and walk through the first mission with them, just to get a better idea of the controls and feel of the game.

I've never played this kind of game before. I grew up on Nintendo and never really stepped outside that box, except to play flash games and The Sims and suchlike.

Does it get better? Is the story/gameplay worth the initial frustration? (I have the PC version, if that wasn't clear already, not the Xbox version) I've heard such good things about the ME trilogy and I want to give it an honest go!

(I'd like to branch out my game experiences a little more in the future - for example try things like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Portal)

Honestly, while I was really confused starting it off (the first mission bit took me forever on initial gameplay) I think it does get better. There is a map; usually it is the 'm' key on your keyboard, but I can't remember the exact controls for ME right now. However, if you press the escape button, a lot of info will pop up.

I think a lot of current games assume you play games, so it might be a bit tricky, and I know there was one part in the first mission where I basically ran around for 20 minutes not sure where I was supposed to go. But it gets better, I think, and the story and the game are so much fun that it's definitely worth it to keep playing.

ahaha the esc key is my friend!

Thanks, it really makes me feel better about it to know that I'm not the only one who floundered around on the first mission. Maybe I'll give it another go tomorrow!

ME would be a rather difficult game to start out with if you are only used to things like nintendo and Sims, but I think you can do it. Maybe look up a game guide, even if you don't want to cheat and just use it for the first section, so you don't have to focus so much on exactly what to do, but more of orienting yourself with the controls and a method of play that works for you.

Though I would say, it's be a lot easier to make the transition to more difficult games with something like Zelda or Final Fantasy.

I'm a huge Zelda player already. (My favorite Nintendo franchise.) I really want to try FF but don't really have a platform for it available...

Anyway, do you have a rec for a good game guide? Like one that doesn't assume I already know all the lingo and stuff? =3

ooo I played the whole series in the last 6 months and had fun, so I recommend it! I am not a gamer, but I did play Portal 2, and a few FPS in my teens like 10 years ago. I found the story itself and the romantic plots incredibly ridiculous, but the world building was usually pretty awesome. I <3 femshep.

In terms of the gameplay, don't worry, there is usually a fairly linear route to the levels. Your squad will sometimes run ahead, but they don't go far. You press M to open the map (I found a good guide to the controls here: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Codex/Player_Tutorials) and if I could give 2 pieces of advice to past me for playing ME1 they would be:

1) open the map (M) and right click on where you want to go. It will create a flag, and the an arrow on your radar screen will show you the direction to move. Especially useful when you're in the Mako (vehicle) and want to check out weird spots on the map.

2) I seriously abuse the spacebar (HUD) in combat in this game. I am not a combat game player, so it made combat a lot less stressful. The moment I see a bad guy, I press spacebar and decide what I'm going to do (usually blast with powers :D).

If the first level is confusing you, I seem to remember something weird about your squad disappearing in the first level, it's not what usually happens.

tysm for the link! I will definitely be utilizing it!

What is the HUD exactly? Is it a shortcut of sorts? (I haven't gotten into any combat yet, so I don't know how I'm going to deal with it, though I did [accidentally] figure out how to draw/holster my gun and shoot it)

Oh and thanks for the advice about the map! That sounds incredibly helpful! :D

I think HUD stands for Heads Up Display? It's basically freezes time and you can take a relaxed moment to look at your surroundings and chose what weapons you and your squad are using, assign them specific enemies to kill, and select and aim "powers" to use on enemies. When you let go of [space] everything you selected will be released (like 3 attacks at once on one enemy: very effective!)

That sounds awesome. Totally using the shit out of that.

I had a really hard time getting used to it at first, but it does get better! I replayed the first mission a few times to get used to the targeting system and all that. Um, it wasn't until ME2 that I started caring about where my teammates were or what they did(lone wolf style), so it's possible to play without really worrying about them.

Argh, there IS a map or something, but I can't remember how to get it(though you may not even be playing on the same console as me). If I remember it correctly, it does show you where your destinations are with lil blinkers and such? Man, just follow the tutorial the above person linked too, sorry. X(

Re: Mass Effect

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-07-20 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
haha it's fine. And it's good to know that if my squad disappears it won't really affect the mission or plot. (They just...show up on base again later?)

Some people above helped out with the map and a beacon so, that will be awesome! I abuse maps - I'm a really visual person, I use them a lot in Zelda games and such, it really helps keep me oriented.

(I'm playing on PC, I downloaded the game from Steam)

I don't have really good advice since you're a PC player and I just have the 360 and PS3 versions, but ....I want to say that it's worth it. I'm also heavily biased. :P Even if you don't like it in the end, at least give it a fair shot. Anything you hear about the ME3 endings be damned, the series is that good. =P

Besides being a ridiculously huge ME fan, I also think it's great that you're trying a game that's different for you. That's when I have the most fun with video games :)

The controls on Mass Effect are unusual and a little hard to get used to. My advice is to take it slow, make sure you wander around everywhere (with your gun out, lol), talk to everyone, and make lots of saves. Oh and if you have a mind to do such things, play on easy difficulty the first time around. It really does make a difference.

The story in Mass Effect is the best part of the game, IMHO, and is most definitely worth it.

I've played it over several times and it's probably my favourite game ever, feel free to ask if you have any questions :)

Thanks so much! Talking to people really helps, yeah. I might start my file over to do a more thorough talking-to with the people on the ship since I kind of skipped some of those, I think? And work on the map thing and stuff too...

i love games but mass effect was not my cup of tea. i didn't like the mechanics/controls and i thought the storyline was really lacking. it's considered an ~innovative game but i'm not a fan of bioware games in general.

i think sticking to the end of a game that starts out choppy for you is kind of a hit and miss thing, and largely depends on whether or not it has qualities that make/break a game for you. for instance storyline and character development are important to me just as much as game mechanics are, so i can overlook frustrating mechanics that take a few days to get used to if the story is good. if you like sci-fi storylines (the game is more or less entirely about saving the human race/galaxy from these robot pieces of shit) then it may be worth it. mass effect gets better after awhile imo, even if not enough to keep me interested personally.

like someone else said, mass effect can be a pretty overwhelming game for someone who is used to nintendo games, because it's a lot different than anything nintendo has on the market. a lot of western game companies have this annoying habit of making things really complicated in order to be ~showy and yet a lot of times this makes it difficult to learn how to play their games, especially with bad in-game tutorials. there are worse games than mass effect about this (like fucking borderlands, jesus) but anyway tl;dr it's not just you lol mass effect is objectively pretty complex and not 100% in a good way.

if you're looking for recommendations, i do highly suggest portal 1 and 2, theyre super good, relatively simple and are surprisingly deep (but only if you want them to be). left 4 dead is another good valve game but it's pretty bloody so if you arent into that then nvm.

taking this section to bitch about borderlands again because that game is so irredeemably shitty and yet i still play it on a semi regular basis despite hating pretty much everything about it (except the claptraps obv but i love robots so big surprise)

I'm definitely considering the Portal series :D

Aren't those a little more puzzle-oriented too?

I just started re-playing ME on the PC. I played on xbox the first and boy, the controls are infinitely much better on PC, haha.

I love the story. I think 2 is way better than 1, but it's really no use (and way less emotional oomph) starting the second before the first.
For me, characters and the story grew on me slowly. Make always sure to talk to your companions on board to get to know them better.

You asked for a guide, well there is the wiki (http://masseffect.wikia.com/) where you can look up every mission individually.

About your teammaters disappearing... that sounds odd. When does that happen?

They disappeared randomly during my first mission.

Thanks for your feedback! I'm looking forward to getting more into the game :)
