Fallout 1 is the greatest RPG ever made, hands down, no arguments, I'll fight anyone who says otherwise, come at me bros. More, I'd say it was so awesome it sucked all the awesome out of its contemporaries and that's why Planescape Torment sucks.

But Fallout 3 is fucking fantastic too. At the time, it had given me what Stalker could not (but really wanted to.) And in a way, it still does. I still play it every other year.

and that's why Planescape Torment sucks

You take that back.

NEVER. I'm not saying it's the worst game I ever played but it's bad enough that comparisons can be made.

You just cannot stop with your PT hate, can you.

Nope :)

But what about the Baldur's Gate series? I'm not going to argue that Fallout doesn't deserve the best RPG ever title, but Baldur's Gate was pretty bitchin' too. And it had Minsc. MINSC.

Infinity Engine made it more or less unplayable, and it was also bog-standard Tolkein-esque fantasy knockoff stuff. Fallout at least did something different from the same damn fantasy RPGs they made a million of in the 90s.

Nuh-uh! It was DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS! So a slightly different flavour of Tolkien knockoff. It has more dragons. And dungeons.

Also, Fallout pretty much copied Wasteland. It's certainly a better game, but it wasn't the first postapocalyptic RPG.

Never said it was. But we have... what, two post-apocalypse RPGs versus HOW MANY damn fantasy settings?

(Also, if we're going to be splitting hairs, Wasteland was in the 80s, and I said 90s)

it had given me what Stalker could not

But STALKER was going for something entirely different.

Still love the hell out of FO3, though. The atmosphere.

Actually, no it wasn't. It was always marketed as open-world and everyone thought that meant Elder Scrolls-style. I still remember everyone calling it Oblivion With Guns before SoC ever came out. When it actually did come out and did not have the wide-open sandbox thing that everyone expected, there was some disappointment.

In many ways, Call of Pripyat is what Stalker should have been from the beginning. The areas are huger with more to do, and the design is better. Much of the first two Stalker games were more or less disparate regions with a few landmarks to make them unique, and they relied too much on steep hills to provide boundaries that just made me wonder why Cordon didn't flood every time there was a storm.
