Eh, that's pretty much what I said when I found out before the show that the fandom already existed. When you have a fandom with such high expectations and there's so much speculation and it's so large, you're bound to find lots of sour grapes. Sometimes I think it's more fun to just enjoy shows instead of being involved in fandoms for them anyway.

I've seen a disgusting number of people bawwing over the fact that they were expecting LOK to be something that it was never set up to be: a preachy didactic treatise on oppression, and they're mad that it's about martial arts and blowing things up (the horror!). Not to mention the snottiness I've seen from certain fans toward those who simply like General Iroh for being badass and pretty, because apparently we're supposed to hate him because he lacked foresight and screwed stuff up.

I have been in a number of large fandoms and all of the garbage and wankiness from AtLA seems to have carried over in spades to Korra. It makes me really sad when I go to look for discussion and all I can find are treatises on "Why Korra Is Just Bad" and thousand comment wanks on how horrible each and every character is. Apparently the show is completely irredeemable for there to be another season much less three. And this is from the so-called "fans" of the show, not even the people who actively hate it.

I enjoyed the show, but have found zero joy in the fandom. I'm not saying everything must be 100% positive all the time, but damn. I come away bummed out and sad every time I dip my toe in meta. Too much negativity. I'll watch the show and the seasons, but will not participate in the fandom.

I get that, anon. I started watching it here recently, and honestly, I really like it. All I want to do is talk about characters (Bolin, who I love, Lin, who I love, etc.), the new stuff we're seeing (metalbending cops! cars that look like little palaquins!), the martial arts styles they're drawing from, what we think is going to go on in the second season, etc.

And then all I find is wank about how Korra sucks because she dares have a crush on a "bad boy", or blahblahblah. Fuck that noise, I'll go find some grown-ups to play with.

...Anyone want to talk about what they think the long-term effects of the Equalists and the reaction by Tarrlok could have on the non-Equalist, non-benders with his extreme reactions? Or how Republic City seems to have no representative for itself, kind of like how Washington D.C. is treated in the United States? Anyone?

Agreed - the maturity level of that fandom is lower than I'm willing to put up with. Of course every fandom has its negativity, but some are worse than others, and unfortunately Korra is one of those fandoms.

See, I decided to go into it loving every ship and every conversation. It was fun to experience a fandom with that much of an open mind as it was new, and everyone was just as new to it as well.

That being said, just try to have fun with it in any way you can.

So much THIS. The irrational amount of hate for some of the characters, especially Mako, just gives me a headache. It's so raw and severe, and I can't help staring at my screen thinking "You guys are my age or older, you...you do realize this isn't a real person, right?"

After I saw puerile and hateful rants about Mako's VA, or his position in the magazine cover with the other VA's, I just put up my hands and left. There's no excuse for hating on a VA for simply giving a voice to a character. Not even if you have an insane hateon for them. This fandom needs to mature, and badly.

As an outsider, the A:tLA and Korra fandoms seem like crazy wankfests. I'm sure it's saner when you're involved and that the wank and shit come from specific corners of the fandom.

I guess it was predictable that the fandom would be like that.

a) High expectations.
b) Old fans reviving old wanks.
c) New fans reviving old wanks. There are three groups of new fans:
i) Genuinely new "never seen Avatar" fans.
ii) Fans who were too young to join fandom the last time. I think those fans can bring the worst wanks because they tend to be new to fandom culture and the internet in general, so they're unfamiliar with etiquette and wank buttons.
iii) Fans who just weren't in fandom the last time.
d) Inevitable new wank.
