Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dear members of a certain fandom:

STOP SPELLING A PARTICULAR CHARACTER'S NAME WRONG.

I realize that the way his name is spelled is not the popular way to spell it, and I can understand that if you just heard it, you would assume it was spelled the common way. And it's not even like it's a nickname that logically *should* be spelled one way based on the longer version, and the writers insist on spelling it differently in scripts, although I can't remember ever actually having seen it spelled out on the show itself, so people continue to argue about it.

It's not short for anything. There's no debate about it. We've actually SEEN IT WRITTEN ON THE ACTUAL SHOW. Yeah, it's a bit weird and not as "cool" as the common spelling, but I'm assuming the writers chose to spell it that way for a reason. I've only seen it spelled correctly like a handful of times, and for some reason it just bugs me.

I don't even know why it bothers me, it's not even a character I particularly like (I actually kind of dislike him, honestly). What the hell.

Oh, man, I feel you. I've had this happen in fandoms I've been in, and it exasperates me to no end.

Also annoying: When Japanese media is localized and the characters are given American-style names, and people use the Japanese names for some characters and the American names for others. I understand if you grew up with one version or another, but please, pick one set of names and stick with it. Even if a certain character very obviously lacks a name in version 1, don't then use the name given to said character in version 2 while using version 1 names for everyone else. Please.

Want to share the fandom/character, or would that expose you to terrible dogpiling and creepy internet detectives?

Re: Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
oh god, this happens in one of my fandoms too. I want to smack the AO3 tag wrangler at this points for letting the popular, ie. wrong spelling become part of at least one canonical tag. There is no excuse at all in this case, because it's a book fandom.

I have this problem with certain (non-character-name) words in my fandom. Seriously, people, no one is going to charge into a fight shouting "BONSAI" unless they practice the ancient art of bushido.

sorry that was bad

Re: Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
sorry that was AWESOME.

There, I fixed it for you. *fellow anon shares taste for bad puns*

I've also seen Konachiwa, followed (of course) by an entire conversation in English. But the ficcer decided the greeting needed to be in incorrect Japanese. IDEK =__='

Hi five, fellow bad-pun-loving anon!

Eurgh, random bad translations are one of my biggest pet peeves in fandom. If there isn't a good reason to use another language (and you don't speak it well), please, please don't.

Re: Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
THIS SO MUCH. This is such a pet peeve of mine.
And if you really need to mix something 'exotic' *puke* in there (to, y'know, convince the reader the character's foreign and you're just that fond of stereotypes), there are very good dictionaries online to translate simple terms. Gratis means 'for free' in Spanish, NOT 'thank you' (that'd be gracias). Otaku has an awful connotation in original Japanese, so you can't expect a Japanese character to apply the term lightly. Typing a bunch of Latin words doesn't automatically form a coherent sentence, no matter how cool it looks. Using the Japanese spelling for an English word doesn't make you more of a fan, just a purist idiot. Addio is a rather strong term for an Italian to say goodbye, it implies they won't be seeing you ever again (arrivederci or ciao would be more acceptable). And so on.
Also, if you make the effort of learning a language other than your native tongue, you'll use it. You won't weave ridiculously basic words of your own language into your speech. You may make mistakes, but you won't be saying 'Hallo', 'Hola', 'Konnichiwa' and so on, because the fucking first thing you learn is that, in English, it's 'Hello'. You may use your native vocabulary when you don't remember/know how to say something, but will try to explain what you mean, rather than assuming everybody knows what you're talking about.
RAGH. I have too many feels about this stupid detail.

these are all valid complaints, don't worry

With you a hundred percent, especially on that last point. Seriously, when I was learning English, I used the hell out of the simple words - yes, no, thank you, can I go to the bathroom, so on and so forth. People don't execute grammatically flawless sentences with complex structures and advanced vocabulary, and then add a "oui" or "da" at the end. They just...don't.

(All right, maybe there ARE some people in the world who do that, or maybe people who are just trolling, but not generally speaking.)

Re: Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Precisely! As a student, you tend to overuse non-verbal language and the simplest of words because they're, well, simple. Those get ingrained into your brain out of simple repetition, you don't borrow these terms from your mother tongue. Sentence structure, specific vocabulary and so on, you borrow the hell out of those, but NOT the yes/no, hello/goodbye type of stuff.

That said, it's kind of hilarious when English-speaking people use certain Spanish words/phrases ('Johnny, la gente está muy loca', anybody?). Though I honestly can't believe 'Mi casa es tu casa' is so hard to spell. Google is your friend!

Anyway, thank you both. I feel validated now u_u *hugs lovely anons* And I think I'll start saying 'Hola/Chau' and 'sí' instead of the English equivalents to troll the shit out of people. Thanks for the idea >:D

... I could start saying 'Ave/Salve' and so on. O__O I could troll as an ancient Roman and act outraged at people using these inferior, evolved, deformed versions of Latin whenever somebody says something in Spanish/Italian/French/Portuguese and so on. I... I need to sit down. And start plotting.

YES! Add Esperanto to the list too. It's not a real language! ;)

Hahahaha FUCK YEAH. Yes indeed. Oh sorry, I meant jes, certe XD All these people and their 'real', non-constructed languages need to get over themselves.

Re: Really stupid thought that I have to get out

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTOMENTE! Constructed languages are dead useful and sexy. Like, everyone should know a bit of Dothraki. There's nothing more arousing than a half-naked horse lord saying, "my moon and my stars, ride me." Solves a shitload of underpopulation problems IMHO.

Klingon should be a required language in schools too. There would be so much less anger management issues if everyone knew Klingon.

And to think that I argue with my family when I say Latin is useful. I like you, fellow anon, and the way you think. I heartily approve of half-naked horse lords and their sexy words of sexiness.
I can't fully endorse Klingon as a required language in schools, though, when there's Sindarin and Quenya and so many wonderful Elvish languages that can force you to improve your calligraphy so drastically. I'm drawn to beautiful-looking languages (oh Japanese, one day you and I will become very good friends, very good friends indeed).

Ah hell, might as well de-anon. The Esperanto and Dothraki comments were me. I wish I'm more proficient in Latin. It really is useful though. Many scientific, medical and judicial terms are of Latin origin. Knowing Latin makes things so much easier.

I'm more partial to Chinese calligraphy than Japanese calligraphy. I like the logographic aspect of Chinese; Japanese writing is more syllabic than logographic. It is a unique language nonetheless. I wish you smooth sailing in your adventures with Japanese!

If it makes you feel better, it isn't just fanfic this happens in. I read a professionally published, well-reviewed novel based in WWII-era Japan, by an author with a Japanese last name, which uses random bits of Japanese in conversation. Random bits of Japanese which are dead wrong. I wanted to throw the book at the wall. Seriously, how hard is it to find a fluent speaker who will take half an hour to check your Japanese usage?
