Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.
Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.
That's about it, though!
I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)And everything I love about the idea of it is either completely ignored or loses importance by the end because Twu Wuv, such as: Defying both biology and social hierarchies, heats as a source of power rather than a vulnerability (i.e. alphas being at the omegas' whims when they're in heat), mpreg that is somewhat plausible (i.e. fertile Omegas as intersexuals who are only superficially masculine or feminine as they so choose), female alphas, omegas who love omegas and alphas who love alphas, happily submissive alphas and dominant omegas, people finding their true mates more than once, polyamory (an omega with several alphas servicing him, yessss), or very dark versions which emphasize how supremely fucked up such a society most likely would be, no true love and no happy papas at the end, just rocks fall, everyone dies. And, okay, knotting. Gotta admit knotting is pretty hot.
I've...thought a lot about this, haha. But I've come to accept that if I want to see all that stuff, I'd have to write it, and while I find omegaverse very, very interesting (hence why I ever try to read it), it's just not my thing. I want to see the potential of it fully realized by a smart author who finds it hot as well as fascinating, so they can inject a passion into the story that I would completely lack. But we come full circle again, in that most people who find it hot tend to want that stuff from above that freaks me out. So. There we are.

And why are certain tropes played out over and over where other ideas - all the interesting ones you mentioned - just glossed over or ignored?
Re: Alpha/Omega
(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 04:52 am (UTC)(link)I could be wrong since it's not my kink, but it seems to me a lot of it's about finding pleasure in a total loss of control, stripped-down and intensified: Heats that steal away logic and inhibitions; knotting that forces closeness with a partner; scenting arousal that removes miscommunication of interest that might turn spontaneous ravishing into assault; mate bonding with one person whether it's willing or not; pregnancy that's almost always initially unwanted. As I understand it, it's a lot more romantic to envision really filthy, wild, and immediate sex that both parties ~just couldn't resist omg~, than when everyone goes into it with total control and making informed choices. I prefer the latter and you can see it in the ideas I listed, but that puts me in the minority in pretty much all romance. Most people find loss of control hotter.
(Plus, I've always felt there's a strong element of projection, considering it's written by an almost entirely female base focusing on feminization of individuals whose biology and sexuality are exploited by more masculine figures in power, often second-class citizens who love their oppressors anyway. You see this happen in much of mainstream hetero romance, especially the paranormal stuff. Omegaverse is only unique in removing women from the equation and being a bit more shameless about it, IMO.)
I, uh, can't explain the assbabies. It seems like it would be an easier answer to just give a dude a vagina, but I rarely see it done. Might be most people feel it intrudes on the m/m fantasy if there's any visible (i.e. not a uterus) female parts involved.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 04:59 am (UTC)(link)I've seen some good writers start with those different angles, and the story clings to them valiantly until the point when love/lust has to conquer all, and then they get quietly discarded. I've been disappointed by a lot of fics that way, and it turned me off from looking very hard, so it's entirely possible I missed some rare gems. Hope springs eternal.
