F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?
Pet thread
Guilty pleasure thread
Favorite old shows
First fandom?

Love it? Hate it? TELL ME WHY, F!S, because although I completely can't stand it in fic, I love to talk about it. XD

I don't know how I feel over it! I just feel conflicted. *dramatic tears*

Rec me some for science?

I agree, it's fascinating.

Does anyone have any links to fics about female omegas? I've only read one but it was so hot. So help me, this is my kink :(

No filthy girls here, breeder.

Mostly hate, yet a burning fascination. I get really frustrated because it seems like a really interesting topic/trope yet every fic I've read that has A/O is just full of shit. It's like people use it as an excuse to write stereotypes and weird uke shit and totally write off any female characters. But the potential for examining so many societal roles and and and I feel like it's such wasted potential!

I hate the fic but would fucking love to take some college level anthropology type course examining the A/O phenomenon and the common themes therein. I am fascinated by it.

Same. It's like this conglomerate of batshit ideas and I just wonder, where did this come from? Who created these rules? WHY these rules?

Re: Alpha/Omega

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-07-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Right? And why does everyone adhere to the same bizarre rules? And why is it so popular? What is it about biological imperative mating rituals, dog dicks, and m-preg that strikes so many people?

There's also a shit ton of gender weirdness going on that you could easily spend days on.

I'm intrigued by the idea. But there is so much sexism in the execution most of the time that I stay the hell away.

Are there fics that focus on female alphas out there? Because I'd read the hell out of that.

I recently saw a fic that had a submissive!alpha and dominant!omega, but the execution was so horrible I couldn't make it through. If done well that could be interesting, though.

Hate it with a burning passion and think it's mostly an excuse to write terrible, OOC porn.

What even is it? Do they turn the characters into wolves or what?

I still have no idea what it is, but from what I've heard, I don't think I want to find out.

Hate it because it enshrines dom/sub dynamics into biology, NO THANKS.

Re: Alpha/Omega

Everything most fans love about it creeps me right out, such as: Forceful submission and/or mind control, social oppression without social revolution, uncontrollable heat that leads to vaguely dubcon scenarios, buckets of semen, permanent mate bonding, happily ever after, assbabies, absent female characters.

And everything I love about the idea of it is either completely ignored or loses importance by the end because Twu Wuv, such as: Defying both biology and social hierarchies, heats as a source of power rather than a vulnerability (i.e. alphas being at the omegas' whims when they're in heat), mpreg that is somewhat plausible (i.e. fertile Omegas as intersexuals who are only superficially masculine or feminine as they so choose), female alphas, omegas who love omegas and alphas who love alphas, happily submissive alphas and dominant omegas, people finding their true mates more than once, polyamory (an omega with several alphas servicing him, yessss), or very dark versions which emphasize how supremely fucked up such a society most likely would be, no true love and no happy papas at the end, just rocks fall, everyone dies. And, okay, knotting. Gotta admit knotting is pretty hot.

I've...thought a lot about this, haha. But I've come to accept that if I want to see all that stuff, I'd have to write it, and while I find omegaverse very, very interesting (hence why I ever try to read it), it's just not my thing. I want to see the potential of it fully realized by a smart author who finds it hot as well as fascinating, so they can inject a passion into the story that I would completely lack. But we come full circle again, in that most people who find it hot tend to want that stuff from above that freaks me out. So. There we are.

Re: Alpha/Omega

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. Your list of things are all the things I'd love to read. But I've never seen them (although I admit to mainly avoiding these fics for exactly the reasons you described).

Re: Alpha/Omega

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm so bothered by the most popular tropes that I have to pass up or quit otherwise smart fic that might do fun things with the trope, but first, it has to have someone's butt lubricating all over creation why they writhe in mindless heat, so I'm out.

Re: Alpha/Omega

(Anonymous) 2012-07-31 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh same. So much potential for interesting stories that rarely gets realized on that front.

Re: Alpha/Omega

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-07-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
See this is exactly why I find it so fascinating. Because I agree with everything you said - the creepy and the interesting behind the idea. But then why is what I consider - and honestly irl a lot of people consider - creepy so popular? And it is super popular among a certain crowd. I would guess that it's the same crowd that really loves the 50 Shades of Grey type of story.

And why are certain tropes played out over and over where other ideas - all the interesting ones you mentioned - just glossed over or ignored?

A lot of the things you love can be found - you just have to look. There are more people playing with different angles on the trope than you'd think, though it's true that the tropes you dislike are by far more likely to be written.
