Well, to be honest, it's never going to change unless people just say "fuck it" and dress up however they want. It's supposed to be fun. You wanna cosplay? Cosplay. Work it.

Seconding that it won't change unless people make it change, though I totally understand how OP feels. I used to feel the same way and I always got all flustered before wearing cosplay because I felt like I could never do the character justice. Then I decided to just have a good time and not worry about these things. I mean it's not like I can totally shake off my self-confidence issues and I'm sure there probably are people who'd judge me if they saw my pictures, but in the end I think it's worth it to try.

Anyway, good luck OP. I'm sure that for every snoot who only cares about beauty there are a ton more people who are just happy to see people dressed up as the character.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it, anon. Go out there and shake your booty with the best of them in your awesome costume. I used to feel the same way, not just about cosplaying but about wearing even slightly revealing clothes in my general life, too. But then I realised 1) who the hell cares what I look like other than me?* and 2) if I feel comfortable/find it fun to dress a certain way then I should do it for myself and not care what other people think. And so I did! My self-confidence sky-rocketed and if I wanted to cosplay in an outfit as skimpy as Yoko's from Guerren Lagann, I'd do it.

Honestly, confidence is what matters, confidence and the ability to just go fuck the bollocks about it and have a good time. If you believe you look awesome you probably will.

*Yes yes, we've all seen the tumblrs full of 'bad' cosplay photos, and I'm not saying there aren't assholes who will take a pot-shot at some people, but the majority, even if they have a passing negative thought will just walk on by and forget you four seconds later. Besides, it's worth doing what you want even if you get a little negative response.

I want to bronze this comment.

Hell, the whole point of a con is to have fun while doing something other people might consider stupid.

Cosplay, especially at cosplay-focused cons like Dragon*Con, is almost exclusively about craftsmanship. Maybe late at night, after the kiddies go to bed, you'll see the Hot Chick Who Wants To Show Off who cosplays Mystique by donning a thong, blue paint, and high heels, but during the day and around the con, you'll see so many different kinds of people cosplaying, and everyone's excited because "OH MY GOSH THAT GUY/GIRL IS COSPLAYING SOMETHING THAT I LIKE! HOLY CRAP LOOK AT THAT THING THEY MADE!"

Also, best Harley Quinn cosplayer I ever saw was on the plus-sized side, and she was fantastic, because she took an overdone character and approached it with humor and originality and skill, and gosh darn it, she was adorable! I remember years ago at A-Kon, there was always a team of plus-sized Sailor Scouts. They looked fantastic, because they put effort into their costumes.

A lousy costume makes you look bad. A well-made costume makes you look good. It's really that simple.

Go for it, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely it depends on the character? Some character costumes are more about you already looking like them, while others require great craftsmanship.

That's why I like following cosplayers who make their own costumes... because I can't sew worth a shit and I appreciate the craftsmanship. Especially people who make their own armor because that is amazing

To me, unless you make your own costume you're just a model and not a cosplayer, sorry

I think Japan would disagree with you. 99% of people there don't make their own costumes, but still consider wearing a bought costume as cosplay. That's why it's called cosPLAY not cosSEW.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
right. you've obviously never been to a con. at this point i kind of wish it was a beauty contest.

The best answer is, of course, "It doesn't matter, just have fun," but if you absolutely don't want to cosplay because of your looks, an option is to pick a character whose costume works with your looks, not against them. If you don't like your face, pick a character who wears a mask. If you're overweight, pick a character with lots of ruffles/petticoats/etc.

Honestly, the costume is the important part, not your physical looks. But there are ways to make your physical looks work with your costume, even the parts of your body you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mean to be a dick, but in all honesty, in all the cons I've seen most of the people at the very least plain/average. Beauty is few and far between (not just at cons, but life in general), don't feel so bad, you'll just blend into the crowd.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If a person showers, has clean teeth and hair, and wears a bit of make-up (for photos, at least) they'll stand tall above 99.999% of other cosplayers, irrespective of looks, weight or costume skills.

Clean counts. It really does.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
If your view of what cosplay is/isn't and whether you can/can't cosplay is determined solely based on what you see in pictures on the internet and not from actually going to a con and hanging out with cosplayers?

No.

The internet has done both great and terrible things to cosplay. One of the terrible things is giving people the impression that unless you're a model and get professional photoshoots, you can't do it. This couldn't be further from the truth. Go to cons - go to a variety of cons - and hang out with the right people and you'll see that it is just as much about craftsmanship and love of the character as it is bodies.

It's definitely the other way around, I think. People generally appreciate the time and effort put into a really good cosplay, regardless of your looks. But I'm sure you're beautiful <3

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Trust me, I am winning absolutely no beauty contests but I have a blast with cosplay and I've gotten a ton of pictures doing so. Hell, even the cosplays I don't get pictures in, I still have fun with. This past weekend I cosplayed two really obscure characters and got maybe two pictures between the both of them. But I still got into character and had a lot of fun with them.

Cosplay is a very personal thing. Do it because you want to do it, not because of what anyone else around you might think, especially because the random people you see at a con who might be rude you will never see and recognize again in real life!

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2012-07-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I think it's funny you used a picture of Jessica Nigiri, considering all the complaints /cgl/ (the cosplay board on 4chan) has about her, from her using the same fucking make up for every costume to her lying about making any part of her costumes to doing costumes that seem like she's cosplaying for male attention.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to lie and say that isn't part of it. It's like saying modeling is all about the clothes. You would think that it would be all about the clothes, but those models can get just as popular as the brands they wear. But sometimes you've just got to say, "Fuck it!" and do it because you want to do it.

The most amazing cosplay I ever saw was of a person who had their face covered.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I don't think the girl in the secret is really all that attractive, nor are pretty much most of the "hot girls" in the cosplay scene.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Some cons it is - but at a lot of cons it ends up being 'Omg, they didn't make their cosplay up to *my* standards!' snobbery as much as anything else.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Because it is a beauty contest. Not at the con itself but once the pictures are taken and the internet gets involved...yeah. You're fucked if you are even slightly flawed. Seriously, it will never stop being on because majority of people are deeply superficial and also huge assholes.

The concept of 'dancing like no one's watching' only works if you have zero insecurities. And, OP? From what it sounds like you are going to care in the end. So cosplay with a mask on if it bothers you that much right now.

Everyone: go ahead and blast me for this but I'm honestly more worried about OP doing something they will regret. Not everyone can face down assholes with the bravery of Captain America. I'm not saying they shouldn't TRY to fight that insecurity and become more confident, work on their beauty if it helps and all. They should. I DO want OP to become more self-confident but baby steps. Train yourself. Don't just go and do it because regret will come later.

Yes, this is from experience from another matter entirely.
