Mm. I'm not really into fanart the way I am fanfic. I mean, I've seen some, and they're good, and I've seen some that sucked. I've read a shitton of fanfic, good bad and ugly, and there are fanfic sites and archives and personal journals and PDF downloads, and you can spend days reading some of the epic stories. But if I want to find art, I have to do a general Google or Tumblr search and hope for the best. And I look at a drawing for a minute and think, "Neat," before scrolling to the next one.

I don't think fanfic's really so unloved.

This. I mean, I appreciate good fanart, but only for a moment or two before I forget about it and go find some fic. I've honestly never heard of someone preferring fanart to fic. The most I've heard about fanart is from Big Bangs where people comment on the art that goes with the story, but people almost always focus more solely on the story itself. This just does not compute.

I like it in different ways - sometimes I'm in the mood for browsing fanart, sometimes I just want to read a good story. For me, they're just not even in competition.

I prefer fanart to fanfic! And I feel very alone :P

Maybe what they mean is, a fan artist who is clearly drawing something recognizably fannish can make money from it, but a fanfic writer can't do so unless they publish it as shitty, shitty BDSM serials (apparently).

That's the sense I got from this too. Fanfic has to have all the serial numbers filed off before you can even think about making any money off it, but go to any convention or online and there are tons of fanartist selling their wears. [shrugs]

People are just more visual then they are cerebral. Not much to be done about that.
