I'm going to ignore the absurdity of the idea that fanart is more legit/acceptable than fanfic because what the hell? What fandoms are we talking here? In every fandom I've ever been in, the fanfic writers have always been in the majority and only ONE of my active fandoms has a specific art-related annual fest.

If I'm understanding the rest of your secret correctly, in terms of pure "recognisability" I think the thing about fanart is that it lends itself to stylistic favouritism, and if an artist has a very distinct style then people are going to recognise the name because of that. This is why the idea of an anonymous art fest makes me LOL so hard. And unless an author has a particularly distinctive style or is one of the more prolific producers of ficcage, then fantiction I think tends to be more anonymous and people appreciate the writing more than the name. I know that I personally have trouble really distinguishing between awesome fic writers unless there are really key things associated with specific authors that I know about.

Does that make any sense? I know what I want to say but it ain't coming out right...
