I read it that way too.

There's something more personal about fanfiction I guess. There's the interpretation of characters that may or may not mesh with the reader, whether it's seen as wish-fulfillment, and the misleading idea that it's how the writer had hoped the source material had been. And it's not even a new concept, writing fic, considering it's basically what's done with ongoing series and remakes and whatever.
