The problem really was that they decided to allow the chronology to move forward, and make a 50s b-movie instead of the 30s b-movies that the earlier films were. And that meant scary Soviets and aliens rather than scary Nazis and swashbuckling. But the audience wasn't interested in that shift, and rejected it.
It was an interesting idea, but the future impact of the alien b-movies of the 50s was very different than that of the adventure b-movies of the 30s and really, of all people Lucas should know that.

However, I don't think the raft was as silly as the fridge. The raft assumes that they had a lot of luck and it only dips into the unbelievable a little bit - not enough to break suspension of disbelief.
The fridge on the other hand is just so ridiculously impossible that you have to laugh.
(Well that's my personal opinion anyway :I)

I should look up that episode. Because, I dunno, I have a lot of difficulty believing that the raft thing is even sort of plausible.
