I refuse to spell it that way. It will always be Sci-Fi.

And, um, the secret. Yeah, I watched a little of it and hated it. Sorry OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. I hate the movie because it's a terrible movie. The wedding was the only part I halfway enjoyed.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
the aliens bothered me. But I liked everything else. And I have to watch it on the sly b/c my husband hates it and thinks it's the worst thing to happen in the history of ever.

Terrible movie. I chose to forget everything about it and I guess I did good, because I seriously couldn't remember that he got married until I read this secret.

Avatar and this one, I will forever hate them.

I didn't love the movie - I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it the way I'd loved Raiders and Ark. But I second the above commenter, the wedding was one of my favourite parts.

I just, and this is only my opinion, feel like introducing aliens to the Indiana Jones mythos fell kind of flat. I would have preferred them sticking to more supernatural stuff. The whole project was kind of indulgent, which is fine really, especially with such a long-established and well-loved franchise, but it felt like the aliens were more about Lucas and Spielberg indulging themselves and their own personal preferences than thinking about what fit with the franchise. But then, I've only seen the movies, I haven't read any of the wider universe and I haven't seen the young Indy series in years, so for all I know, aliens could have been featured before.

I think going into the film with little-to-no expectations was actually beneficial to you, OP. Having so many people tell you it was crap, you didn't expect it to be good, so it was able to pleasantly surprise you. For a lot of people, they'd been waiting years and were built up on hype, and the movie failed to live up to that for them. When that happens, it can be hard not to take it personally - a franchise you love has let you down, and that's often why it goes from just thinking a film is mediocre to actively bashing it. Same thing happened with the Star Wars prequels, after all.

I have to say, though, implying everyone who doesn't like the film is only jealous because Indy got married seems kind of daft. While I admit there are vocally immature people in all fandoms, that doesn't mean everyone with a negative opinion or criticism is just acting out of something as petty as jealousy towards a fictional character. Also, for the sake of disclosure, having a negative opinion or criticism doesn't automatically make anyone a "hater".

Is that a troll?
You liked the ninjas-from-rain forest?
The badly CGI monkey race in the trees?
The "Oh, this must be an ancient alien artefact LET'S POKE A BIG HOLE IN IT"?
The nuclear scene?
Shia LaBeouf's awful acting / character?
The zombie ninjas in the lost city?

This is only half of the reasons I hated this movie. Nothing made sense.
I don't give a rat's ass about Indy getting married, I was happy he married Marion, she was certainly the most badass ladies of the franchise.

It's not entirely deserving of all the hate it gets.

Of course, I could just be biased because it came out the same year as The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Both of them are terrible sequels to movies I adore, but I'd take Kingdom of the Crystal Skull over Tomb of the Dragon Emperor any day.

Uh... anyway, I liked Indy and Marion getting married, and I didn't mind the aliens. What ruined it for me was Shia LaBeouf.

Personally, I just didn't care for it overall; They ALL have moments where you have to suspend your disbelief but they were throwing new ones in every couple of minutes in this one. The selectively magnetic skull, the bad CGI critters IN GENERAL, and I'm with my dad on just about walking out when you introduce the GIANT FOREST-FELLING CAPTAIN PLANET VILLAIN TRAIN OF DEATH

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The wedding was fine, I just hated it because I took too many Anthropology courses where we talked about erasing cultures progress and accomplishments by saying it was ~aliens. Because nobody outside of white men could have possibly done anything awesome. It wasn't a great movie anyway but when it went there I just went all anthropology nerd rage on it.

I watched it in the theater. About halfway through the movie one of my friends said "If it turns out aliens were behind it all, I'm walking out."

And then there was a spaceship. So we walked out.

I had been a fan of Indy for quite some tme before I went to see the 4th film...and I liked it, too. t was a little silly at parts, but nothing that I couldn't bear. It was still worth the money. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me start off by saying, you're welcome to like it. That's fine. People have different tastes in films, that's fine.

I'm a huge Indie fan, yes he's goddamn sexy, but him getting married was not the reason why I hated that film. He got married. Good for him. I like characters to be happy. I hated the film because it was a terrible film. That's just it. Not because he got married, because it's just... it's just bad. I can't even begin to say how bad it was.

[personal profile] truxillogical 2012-07-29 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're not alone. I didn't love it, but I had fun with it. I think it really is more or less on the same level as Temple of Doom (which I hated as a child). Annoying kid sidekick (that I wanted to be)--check. Implausible survival method--check. Moving out of the Judeo-Christian history into other cultures, but failing to do the research and thus being more than a little bit offensive as all get out--check. Tragic lack of Nazis--check.

But it's got Marion, and that was nice.

As for the whole "But aliens!" thing...I thought it made sense. No, not like the plot made sense or anything, but that Indiana Jones was supposed to be a throw-back to the pop culture of the decade it was happening in. In the forties, it's all "Let's fight Nazis!" (with a side dose of "The Orient is filled with weird stuff!") In the fifties, the big thing was aliens. Works for me.

I hated it because it felt so disconnected and added on to the original mythos, not because Indy married the coolest person ever.

But, if they make another Indy movie, I will of course midnight it and dress up. Because I am a fool.
jlh: Bennett Cerf smoking a pipe (Bennett Cerf)

[personal profile] jlh 2012-07-29 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
People hated it because of the aliens.

The problem really was that they decided to allow the chronology to move forward, and make a 50s b-movie instead of the 30s b-movies that the earlier films were. And that meant scary Soviets and aliens rather than scary Nazis and swashbuckling. But the audience wasn't interested in that shift, and rejected it.

It was an interesting idea, but the future impact of the alien b-movies of the 50s was very different than that of the adventure b-movies of the 30s and really, of all people Lucas should know that.

I didn't hate that movie. I'm pretty sure the thing people have problems with are the aliens, but I'm fine with that. What I didn't like was Shia LeBeouf but he kinda bugs me in everything, and he didn't kill the movie for me. I only saw it the once, and it wasn't as good as the others, but I'm fine with it existing.

The only problem I had with this movie is that it's a fucking terrible movie. All of it, starting with the basic script (you know, the plot line with the son and One True Love, the ridiculous Ukrainian villain, and yes, the aliens), ending with that last moment with the hat, cheesy beyond reason.
But yeah, of course, I'm just crushing on Indy.

Well done trying to hide your own bad taste behind stupid assumptions about people with opinions different to yours.
