I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie.

And seriously complaining about the aliens? So the Arkh, the magical stones thing and the holy freaking grail being real and granting immortality is okay but aliens are crossing the line?

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, why don't people just have the balls to stand up and say "I cannot take this movie seriously because it doesn't have Judeo-Christian mythos as its ass-pull deus ex machina"?

AYRT

This! I'm sorry but every the ending to every single Indiana Jones movies was deus ex machina. Quite literally sometimes! I still love the movies, but there were some really stupid things in every one of them. And everybody is just concentrating on the last one.

God can melt Nazis at any time, he just chooses not to do so unless very specific conditions are met because he's just a dick that way!

Great lesson, there. (How the hell long did Indy and Marion have to stay tied to that stake, surrounded by gruesome head-explodey death, anyway? A day? Two days?)

Lol, I seriously love all the Indy films except Temple of Doom, because they don't take themselves completely seriously. Hell, even Last Crusade had that awesomely ridiculous scene with Jones Sr taking down a Nazi plane with seagulls, an umbrella, and an assortment of insane-sounding noises.

The Arkh is at least terrestrial, don't act like supernatural God power and extraterrestrial paranormal shit is the same thing

Oh yeah I forgot it's cool to hate on Jewish mythology and mysticism

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not hating on Jewis mythology. I'm sorry if it came off like that.

I'm just saying that's a fantasy movie in which things that don't exist in reality (like the Ark or aliens) are true. The whole mythology of Hinduism, Judaism and Christianity are true in this world. Is it that hard to accept that in the movies aliens are real, too?

Way to not get the point, which was to illustrate that the alien archeologists are rejected out of hand because they are NOT "Judeo-Christian God" interference.

That is not meant to be hating on the Judeo-Christian Mythos, that is meant to illustrate that some people are apparently threatened by something OTHER than Judeo-Christian God indirectly interfering with "Bad Guys" in an Indiana Jones film.

I warmed to the idea a little more when I got told that at the time the film was set alien movies were a thing, in much the same way mystical stuff was a thing in the time of the other three.

I mean, I don't like Crystal Skull as much as the others but I don't hate it. The biggest problem I have with it isn't the aliens anyway, it's Mutt. But that's probably the actor rather than the character. Oh and another thing that bugged me...John Hurt being really underused.

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So did I. It creates some wonderful paradoxes. Movies who are set in certain time having a certain motive because at that motive was common in the time they are set in.

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because a lot of supernatural fantasy and sci-fi franchises stick to their own genres and don't mix, so people have grown accustomed to that. Buffy and the Winchesters never fought aliens, for instance. Although sci-fi and fantasy often get lumped together in a wider sense, there's still a divide between the two, and when that divide is taken away (especially in a franchise that had previously been steeped in only one of the genres) it doesn't always work out. Because they are separate genres. Just because both require a serious suspension of disbelief doesn't mean the same people who enjoy films about, say, magical artifacts and werewolves are going to enjoy films with space-travel, is what I'm getting at.

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I can understand that point.

I always saw the Indiana Jones movies more as ''Every myth is true.'' and less about strictly sticking to fantasy so it didn't bothered me.

But I can see why some people might have problems with that.

honestly, do you not understand indiana jones? the reason all that other supernatural stuff was okay is because it related to history (ya know, relating to the whole thing of IJ being history obsessed and an archeologist and whatnot). the alien thing came way the fuck out of nowhere and was utterly bizarre.

Re: I don't get the alien hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And God being real didn't.

But all through history there have been "inexplicable" finds in archeology that do not quite fit into the theories science has to date. Blaming it on Aliens, or people from Atlantis, or some other long-lost culture really has an old tradition. To me, there's not much difference in saying: ooh, the nasca lines were done by aliens or "Ooh, the Mayans were influenced by Atlantians".

Because he's an archaeologist, not Erich von Däniken. Yes, both melting Nazis and aliens are silly if you stop and think about it but you can suspend disbelief for one and not for the other, because in context it works. Although maybe if Crystal Skull had been a better movie then I might have been more up for the genre change. Same as how I can't get past how ridiculous Temple of Doom is, it's just not as good as the other two.

You don't see the difference with wanting to keep a fantasy adventure series and a fantasy adventures series and not a sci-fi one? Well, how about instead of Frodo sneaking into Mount Doom, would it have been better if he had just stomped in inside an At-At? No. Because sci-fi and fantasy are different genres.

I can speak only for myself, but as an Indiana Jones fan, I loved that they dealt with mythology, namely God and gods. I don't want aliens. I want magic not technology. I would have liked it if they had made it about the Inca gods. There are so many stories to mine from. Instead, they made it about something that has nothing to do with Inca mythology. Aliens. There are no aliens in Inca mythology. And don't give that bull of, "Well, the Inca people could have mistaken aliens for Inca gods." No, that's not mythology. That just making up stuff and putting on a modern twist. I want old. I want to be able to look up the mythology and go, "Oh, so that is that god does."

Sci-fi and fantasy are definitely different genres, but there's nothing inherently wrong with mixing the two.

As a fellow mythology buff, I can see where you're coming from with your other point, though.

Aliens was a logical follow-up to Judaism, Buddhism and Christianity

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
It followed in the same footsteps of being an icon of a faith-based belief system, really, in a different way, and it was also perfect for the 1950s. Clever, no problem with it.

Re: Aliens was a logical follow-up to Judaism, Buddhism and Christianity

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Small correction but the religion in the second movie would be Hinduism not Buddhism. Buddhism does, as far as I know, not believe in the existence of gods.

Otherwise I totally agree with your argument.
