Within fandom, fic is usually more popular from what I've seen. At least, long, multichapter fic is. It seems like you have to be a really amazing artist to get the same amount of recognition as a decent fic writer that writes long fics centered around popular characters. But then, on sites like dA or tumblr where you can just like and reblog things, art tends to get a lot more notice, since it only takes a moment to look at a picture and like or reblog it, whereas actually reading a fic takes more effort. That said, it's kind of logical. Image oriented sites will favor images. Prose oriented sites will favor prose.
But then there's also the matter of people who are more on the outside of fandom. Both fanfic and fanart do get the criticism "you should work with your own original ideas instead!", but it seems worse with fic. With fanart people are more open to accepting that drawing it can be good artistic practice, whereas the same isn't usually said for fic. Also there is the matter of it being okay to sell fanart but not fic.
Just a thought re; everyone jumping on OP here.
