Re: Holden Caulfield was a douche
(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)'cause having a mental illness like depression doesn't mean literally having no control over your actions so it certainly doesn't give people like Holden Caulfield a free pass to act however they choose. It just makes them more sympathetic.
TL;DR: the feelings (or lack of feelings) may be out of one's control, but one's actions aren't.
Re: Holden Caulfield was a douche
Also, Holden doesn't really do that many dickish things in the novel, you just get a lot of his inner monologue and what he's thinking, so people tend to think he's a dick. He actually cares very deeply for his sister, and most of his misanthropy is aimed at adults and considering it's set in the fifties most of his complaints about "phoniness" and such seem rather valid to me. Honestly, get inside of any teenager's head and you'd probably think they were a douche, rather or not they acted on any of their angsty thoughts or chose to hide them outwardly

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 08:08 am (UTC)(link)What I'm pretty sure the other anons were getting at is that, while *yes* you might feel a certain way, and *yes* being mentally ill makes behaving nice harder, it's *not* an excuse to get out behaving like a decent human being. At the end of the day it's *you* who decides how you act, and if you decide to act like a douche? That's your choice, you can't blame it all on being mentally ill.
*I don't really want to mention what it is specifically because well..yes. I am a little ashamed of it.
