Well, I never meant to imply that people with mental illness lack control over their emotions or actions, but speaking as someone who has bipolar disorder, it's really, really hard. Harder than for a healthy person.

Also, Holden doesn't really do that many dickish things in the novel, you just get a lot of his inner monologue and what he's thinking, so people tend to think he's a dick. He actually cares very deeply for his sister, and most of his misanthropy is aimed at adults and considering it's set in the fifties most of his complaints about "phoniness" and such seem rather valid to me. Honestly, get inside of any teenager's head and you'd probably think they were a douche, rather or not they acted on any of their angsty thoughts or chose to hide them outwardly

While it's true that it's harder to control emotions for some of us, it's still possible and a very important skill to learn to get by in society. I know this the hard way since I have a disorder * that means I feel everything at full blast, without the normal shades of said emotion. So, when I'm happy, I'm on cloud 9. When I'm angry, on the other hand? I want to rip someone's face off. Trust me, it was hell learning to rein my emotions in enough to function normally in society, and there are still times I slip up. However, that doesn't excuse me from acting like a decent human being and allow me to hurt other people's feelings just because they happened to hit something that upset me, or because they did something I didn't like.

What I'm pretty sure the other anons were getting at is that, while *yes* you might feel a certain way, and *yes* being mentally ill makes behaving nice harder, it's *not* an excuse to get out behaving like a decent human being. At the end of the day it's *you* who decides how you act, and if you decide to act like a douche? That's your choice, you can't blame it all on being mentally ill.

*I don't really want to mention what it is specifically because well..yes. I am a little ashamed of it.
