Is there a technical term for this type of fic...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
...you know, the really irritating trope (that I'm sure everyone has seen before) where the entire cast dogpiles on a character for some reason and OOC-ly acts like a bunch of hypocritical dickwads to him or her/insults the character really nastily/assumes the character did something terrible with barely any evidence/treats the character like shit for some trivial reason/turn on the character and side against him or her even though they'd always give the character the benefit of the doubt in canon?

Like, um...those fics where the Scoobies are randomly sadistic and cruel to Buffy so that she can run weeping into the arms of Spike, who then chews everyone else out by telling them things they already know? Or the Avengers are all ungrateful dickholes to Tony and sincerely believe he's a shallow asshole even though pretty much no one thinks that in canon? Or Harry gets accused of a crime and everyone, even Sirius, who was falsely accused of a crime himself, immediately assume he's guilty with no evidence and don't even act betrayed or bewildered about it but instead gleefully go I KNEW IT and gloat when he gets chucked in Azkaban?

I swear to god, if I see this damn trope one more time...I like seeing my favorite characters angst and I like dramatic misunderstandings, but when I start going "why the fuck does he even give a shit what these assholes think?" my guilty pleasure officially gives out.

TV Tropes calls this "Ron the Death Eater" (usually referring to when it happens to an individual character, but I think it can also apply when multiple characters are demonized). I'm not sure if there's a term for it that's widely used outside of that site.

DA

But isn't Ron The Death Eater where a character is interpreted as a complete monster and demonized and derailed into behaving like a bad guy? I've seen fics like this where the characters who acted like dicks are all remorseful and apologize to the character in the end.

Isn't that just the extreme end of Ron the Death Eater, though? There's fanfics where [insert character here] is OOC and acting like an asshole for no apparent reason, and then there's fics where [insert character here] is OOC and suddenly decides to start raping and murdering people for no apparent reason. They both technically fall under the same trope.

Using one of the examples given by the OP of this thread: The Scoobies get the Ron the Death Eater treatment so Buffy can run crying to Spike (who is presumably being subjected to Ron the Death Eater's sister trope, Draco in Leather Pants). Even if they eventually apologize for their douchebaggery, they were still being demonized to show how much better Buffy (or Spike) is than the rest of them.

...I'm not sure who named it, but I've heard it referred to as YABS-fic. As in "You'll All Be Sorry". I think it started in the Stargate Atlantis fandom, something to do with an explosion of this kind of fic about an incident in which Rodney blew up a planet or something? (although I've only seen a few episodes of the show so I may be totally mixing things up here...)

I'm also kind of giggling here, because it occurs to me that I'm pretty sure I've actually read fics featuring all three of the exact scenarios you mentioned. :D

I remember a FF8 fic like this and it pissed me off to no end despite disliking Irvine. Dunno why I kept reading.

Selphie is tired of Irvine flirting and asks him to stop. Fair enough.

Someone takes a photo of them during a party. In the photo Irvine has his head turned to look at a girl - iirc he wasn't even smiling.

Everyone reacts as if the photo showed him in a foursome with other girls. NO ONE lets him explain himself, Zell beats him up, he ends up leaving without a trace, no one cares or goes "good!"m and Selphie ends up with Zell.

Years later a ~mysterious man~ shows up and tells Selphie the truth - the girl was Irvine's long-lost sister! Selphie goes "OMG things could've been different" and when the man leaves she realizes that GASP that was Irvine but it's too late now~ and Zell acts all jealous

The author claimed they tried to show different POVs to show how it was "understandable" for Zell/Selphie to think Irvine was wrong. It just made me wonder if she hated all of them.

...Wow, obviously I'm still bitter about it.

I've heard of them referred to as "revenge fics".

Some of those might fall under the "bashing fic" banner, but the difference is that the bashing is often done to a character the author doesn't like, whereas the others are more of a cheap angst, hurt/comfort thing aimed to create catharsis

I don't know what they are actually called, but I think your examples should be called "dogpile" fics.
