He threw out an entire species into a useless wasteland to starve? No wonder they wanted to kill his son. All they even wanted from Scar's rule was food.

Not to mention that the mere idea of a lion led monarchy period is kind of creepy. You're forced to serve and bow before (literally) your predators? Okay.

IDK I was never affected by Mufasa's death as a kid, and the movie always struck me as one of Disney's most patriarchal films anyway, so I'm kind of eh on the whole thing.

It's not like he didn't have a good reason. When they did share the territory with the hyenas, they turned the Pridelands into a useless wasteland, too. I figured the other animals showed respect to the lions solely for keeping the hyenas at bay. But I did resent that portrayal of spotted hyenas, when I got older and did research.

Where do you get the impression that the hyenas turned the pridelands into a useless wasteland? I always thought that was Scar's doing, which was why the hyenas were so angry at him. Scar basically didn't follow through with what he promised them, and so they um... ate him.

(Yeah that bugged me a lot. Especially since the crew talked to hyena experts before doing the film. Said experts were REALLY angry when the movie came out and they saw how they were portrayed.)

It was implied that their numbers were too great (shown in the "Be Prepared" sequence) and without anyone to check their greed, they ate and drank everything (I dunno how that destroyed the plants, too, neither Scar nor the hyenas could have done that). Scar kept his promise to let them eat as they pleased, they only turned on him when he put all the blame on them for his actions, after they'd been fighting the lions for his sake.

Oh, seriously? I didn't know they even bothered to talk to experts. But it makes sense, considering they at least got the design and the female leader right.

That's probably why in the second movie only a bunch of animals appeared to see the newborn baby whereas in the first one, there were seemingly thousands of them.
They'd learned their lesson of letting lions get in charge ;)

As a child I loved this movie, but even then I always thought it was really weird the elephants let the lions reign over them.
I always considered them to be the rulers of African animals, since they were so big, strong, intelligent and usually lived longer than big cats.
I was an animal nerd when I was younger, haha!
